Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Facts about me:
1. I don't swear. I don't say "shut up" to people. I don't say "Oh, my God" (although I've learned to accept these last two in other people's stories). I don't think sex is funny, and if there's a lot of it/talk about it in a story, it makes me uncomfortable. I am willing to read most of these things, to a certain extent (if you read my favorite stories, you'll get a good idea of where I draw the line), so please try me. However, please don't expect me to go against what I believe is right.
2. If I don't want to betaread your story because it has too much adult content/swearing/other in it (see #1), this DOES NOT mean that I don't like your story/writing/yourself/anything else about you. It simply means that there is too much adult content/swearing/other in this particular story. Therefore, if you have a different story you're writing, and you want me to betaread it, PLEASE ask. I am perfectly willing to do this if the story in question falls below my "too much adult content/etc." line, EVEN IF I HAVE ALREADY REFUSED ONE OF YOUR STORIES because it does not fall below that line.
3. I have Asperger's Syndrome (a mild form of autism). Please don't hesitate to mention it, or to say or ask anything about it; I am very open, I DO NOT get offended, and I don't mind talking about it or answering questions--so please, if you're curious (for a story, for information, in relation to my betareading, or anything else) ASK ME.
4. I LOVE reading and writing (otherwise I wouldn't be typing this, right?), and I especially love creative and original ideas (again, who on ff . net doesn't?). However, cliches don't often bother me either--they exist because they are true, or sometimes, in fanfic, because readers can't get enough of them (like fluff...). |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm very good with grammar and spelling. I also tend to be perfectionist (which can be a strength or a weakness, depending on what you need). I pick up on and remember details very easily, both from the books themselves and from the fics. In addition, I have a talent for choosing the best words and sentence structure. Formality is also one of my strengths, and I can go from a level of writing somewhere in between formal and casual to a very formal level. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Well, my perfectionism can be a weakness, depending on your individual needs as an author. I'm terrible with time management, and I can't get on ff . net every day, so if you have strict deadlines, I'm not the betareader for you. I tend to have a somewhat formal style of writing, and do use a number of big words. I also randomly use old-fashioned expressions, and usually don't even realize I'm doing it. When I'm writing, I sometimes end up talking to the reader (kind of like some more old-fashioned authors do; an example of these is E. Nesbit. I can't remember for sure, but I think Lemony Snicket also uses this style a lot...). I LOVE fluff, and so my romance is usually fluffy. I tend to get sick a lot (although I usually don't object to using a computer when I'm sick). I have too many hobbies for my own (and maybe others') good; I tend to have "phases," so that for a period of time (which can range from a few hours to a few years) I'll get really excited about something in particular, and then the excitement will fade, to be replaced by obsession with something else. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Romance - FLUFF! (More on this below.)
Humor
Parody
Hurt/Comfort
Friendship
Family
--------
As far as romance goes, I have favorite pairings, and pairings I don't like (as I think most of us do). As for pairings that are not on either list, it depends, but if you ask, I will probably give them a try. Here are my lists of favorites and of those I am willing to read (which can also be found in my author profile (http : // www . fanfiction . net / ~ hollybridgetpeppermint [take out the spaces])...
Favorite Pairings
Artemis Fowl:
Artemis/Holly
Root/Vinyaya
Trouble/Juliet
Mulch/Juliet
Holly/Root (I'm an A/H shipper, but I will beta these)
Holly/Foaly (see "Holly/Root")
The Phantom of the Opera:
Erik/Christine
Raoul/Meg
Mme. Giry/Nadir (I've only seen one or two of these so far, but I think it's cute and hilarious!)
Circle of Magic:
Rosethorn/Crane
Niko/Lark (Never seen this written before, but I think it's cute!)
Sandry/Briar
Tris/Briar |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Slash--please don't take offense; I don't dislike people who have these tendencies...I just don't like reading about it
Lots of swearing/bad language
Rated higher than T, and whether I would betaread T-rated or not depends on the content
Sex scenes (just in case this doesn't fall under the category of "rated higher than T"--although I don't see how that could be the case)
Graphic violence
Horror/Morbidity
I don't usually like Angst, BUT I MOST LIKELY WILL read it if you want me to
I also don't usually like Tragedy, BUT I PROBABLY WILL read it if you want me to
List of Pairings I Will Not Betaread:
Slash (see above)
Artemis Fowl:
Artemis/Minerva
Holly/Trouble
The Phantom of the Opera:
Fluffy Christine/Raoul (I much prefer C/E, but I MAY be willing to beta a C/R story that's not too fluffy, especially if your Raoul is believable, likable, and human.)
Meg/Erik
Circle of Magic:
Slash, as I said before--so no Rosethorn/Lark, please, and no Sandry/Daja or Tris/Daja either.
Any of the four kids with any of the teachers (i.e. Briar/Rosethorn, Tris/Niko, etc.) |
