Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta-reader, I will do my best to correct basic errors (grammatical and spelling), but I think my strongest point is in character and detail. I like to keep characters as themselves, even in AUs and crossovers, and I love developing them further. I am a big, BIG fan of character-centric pieces. I love reading well thought-out fics and I'm pretty confident in my skill for bringing out details (including background details).
I'm usually pretty slack and easy-going, but I do think I'm rather choosy.
If you'd like to employ me, I'd like a summary of your overall story and a written chapter. I will give you feedback whether I decide to beta or not. :) If you don't send a chapter, then I would be unable to give you feedback. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I can spot discrepancies in characterization pretty quickly. If I disagree with someone, I would not hesitate to tell you so and please don't be offended by that. Unless there is some GREAT AND UTTERLY LIFE CHANGING explanations for why a character is so...OOC, I will probably not believe it. Usually I won't believe the excuses unless it's really good. Because of my crazy IC-obsession, I believe in knowing every minute detail, background or plot-wise, is key to everything. So I'm pretty good with details too, I suppose.
I'm also good at spelling and the usage of words, particularly with mixing up sentence variety. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My main weakness is...grammar. I'm not too great with tenses, but I can tell the difference of when to use past tense and present.
Another weakness I have is plot holes. I'm not too great at spotting those, though on the occasion I can see it. I'm not too stupid about it, haha, but it's not a strength of mine which is why I'm listing it as a weakness.
...My last weakness is my tendency to procrastinate. And my short attention span. Hahaha. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I like stories where protagonists and antagonists are...well, actually in character and true to their canon-selves. I'm okay with many genre of stories, with the exception of a few which is covered in the next section.
I love, and I cannot stop stressing this, how ordinary things can become extraordinary. Really. Enough with the sexy vampires and the demon and angels falling in love; what about the mundane and every day? What about normalcy? How about a father and son bonding moment? Or maybe a simple dinner with a girlfriend/boyfriend?
I love plot as well as action; I like having romance added in to spice things up, but that's only for certain series. It's also a big plus to read about my favorite characters/pairings, which you can easily decipher from looking at my own published fics and favorites list. Before anyone asks, yes, I do like yaoi, but I don't like throwing out the het side of things. I like all sorts of pairings so don't be daunted by the fact that I'm a yaoi fan. 90% of my favorite couples are straight! :] |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I do not care for fanon in the least. Keep the characters true to themselves, please. If you want to write them acting a certain way that is far too unbelievable, go write an original story.
I do not like teenaged angst fest where a protagonist will start cutting themselves; suicidal, depressed, and other sorts are also no gos for me. I'm not a huge fan of original characters either, unless they are spectacularly written. I don't mind high school fics, but I absolutely cannot stand when a character becomes so different that they become unrecognizable save for their name. No, I do not read fics where a character goes goth/punk/etc. No, no, no, no.
I also do not read: sexy vampires, angels and demons falling in love, XYZ turns evil and is super powerful, actors/rock/pop stars falls in love with rival/a nobody, XYZ has super powers and so does XYZ's friends. The only thing that will make me read any of the above is if: 1) You believe it's different from the rest of the ones that are published out on the web 2) My favorite characters/pairings are involved 3) You're not going to write half of it and then dump it. There are too many unfinished fics like the list above out there that they're cluttering up FFnet.
...I may not like certain characters, but I do NOT like character bashing. I refuse to read those outright. |
