Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a person is both a fanfic writer and attempting to be an author I try to write my fanfics as I would my works of fiction. I hold my self to high standards, not only in spelling, but punctuation, grammar and spacing. If it's not spaced properly it's just as bad as a poorly spelt story.
If you would like me to consider betareading please do/consider the following.
1. When you look at it, have a look at my fics and see how they are spaced and set out, please try to do something similar as it makes reading so much easier allowing me to locate anything I feel is incorrect, or should be changed.
2. I will be honest, if I think you are going down the completely wrong path for a story I will say so. I will not be using a 'softly softly' approach. I will be honest, and if you think I am being mean, think again, editors and publisher's are far harsher than I ever will be.
3. Ideas, if I feel you should take an idea in a different way I am not saying you can't make it work, I am trying to make sure you make the best possible story you can, and the best way you can do that is do something new and unexpected.
4. Do your research, understand that with the war games I write I read alot of military and espionage related material. If you want to ask for an idea, or how I feel something should work, then I will answer it as best I can, however, if you write something and I feel you have it completely wrong, I will make sure you know about it.
5. Finally, have an open mind, I write alot, it's what I love to do, and I have plenty of ideas waiting to be unleased. If you really want help, ask nicely and I'll try my hardest, if you want someone to just say 'yes' you've come to the wrong person. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm pretty good at noticing most errors in spelling and grammar, however the occasional one would pass by.
Characterisation and scene building tend to be some of the things I notice pretty quickly, if I feel something more can be done I will point it out. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Form... if it's not neat then I can't stand it, and will not beta it. If you want me to read it make sure there are clear spaces between paragraphs, dialouge is on seperate lines and breaks are clear.
I will not notice everything. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Sci fi/fantasy mainly, in addition, with my knowledge of a moderate ammount of military history as well as doctrine I can help you in ways most authors can't.
Shows such as Firefly, Buffy, Angel, Battlestar Galactica (new), Farscape, Stargate Sg1 and Stargate Atlantis would be good examples.
Game wise, D&D, Baldur's Gate series, Icewind Dale series, Planescape Torment,
Book wise: HP only pretty much.
In terms of ships I don't care as long as it's not one of the ones mentioned below. If it's done well I will read it, Dark!Harry, Light!Harry, or Grey!Harry, I don't care, if it's done well it's worth trying.
I will say this, if it's creative, and it has a fundamentally new idea to it, then I'll give it a go. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
The following I will not touch with a barge pole:
SLASH and MPREG (both are wrong on so many levels. I don't care if I person is gay, that's there business... but the slash is just 'shudders'
Harry/Snape in any form.
Harry/MM, I mean ick.
Harry/MW even worse.
Harry/Draco, why I ask you, why do you even like the snotty nosed brat? |
