Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am willing to beta Doctor Who fic featuring characters from the First, Third, Fourth, Ninth and Tenth Doctor eras, though not for every character from every era. Please contact me for specifics, as I've decided against listing every character I'm familiar with here. I would also be happy to beta-read any fic written that featured Evelyn Smythe and if you don't know who that is, the statement doesn't matter to you.
I try not to be unfairly harsh but I am frequently called 'pedantic' by my friends, when I start correcting tiny things that apparently don't matter, and am capable of being stubborn over said tiny things unless I am convinced otherwise.
I'm not likely to take "Because I say so!" as a proper answer if I think something doesn't make sense. If I think something's wrong, I will say so. I am not a beta who will just tell you how wonderful it is to make you feel better about posting it, but I do try to be nice.
I won't beta anything that bashes any character. Not Sarah, not Adric, not Martha. Characterisation worries are fine but if it's hideously obvious that the whole story is just a vehicle to convey your dislike for a character and that no attempt at accurate portrayal has been made, then, frankly, it's not worth posting and I'm certainly not going to waste my time on it. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm strong with spelling, punctuation and grammar (with one or two fuzzy patches). I also have a fairly good knowledge of the canon in the specified eras (and will jump on any mention of the First Doctor having a sonic screwdriver with both feet). I'm capable of pointing out inconsistencies in characterisation and dialogue and I'm British, so ideally placed to Britpick.
I will try to complete an initial beta within a couple of days of receiving it and am perfectly happy to bat a piece back and forth for as long as it takes. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
An aforementioned fuzzy patch is the use of "its" and "it's"; another is occasional slips in different tenses, as I'm guilty of that in my own writing.
I believe that the possessive form of a word ending in 's', such as "TARDIS", shouldn't have another 's' on the end. "TARDIS'" not "TARDIS'S". Oh, and TARDIS is an acronym and so should be all in capital letters. I will champion the use of the colon and semi-colon and be generally annoying about punctuation and other tiny things like that. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I will beta stories that are rated T or lower. Any genre is welcome but I would rather beta a gen, het or femslash fic as I'm not that interested in slash and tend not to read much of it. I would be perfectly happy to beta either a multi-Doctor story or stories centered around companions without the Doctor present. It's nearly all good for me. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I do not wish to beta any M rated fics or, as I said in my profile, anything that is character-bashing. I would prefer not to beta slash and I would be pretty poor at doing that anyway. |
