Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm not a professional writer, but I practice a lot on my own. As with any writer, my method is the gauge by which I read the work of others. I can be a very demanding critic, though I do my best to see a person's work for what it actually is and to not make unreasonable demands of them. I am not easily swayed in my style and I will ignore criticism if I feel it violates the intention of my work, so I expect much the same from other writers. As such, I do not go for workshopping because I feel it leads writers with weak identity to discard positive aspects of their styles for more homogeneous textbook approaches. I feel workshopping is akin to inbreeding because the preferences of the group will often leech into all the individuals, especially those exposed too frequently. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I excel in my writing at texture, mood and environment. I have been applauded for my ability to use highly evocative descriptive imagery. I can write very intense sequences involving action or emotional conflict. My writing tends to have an extremely raw, immediate edge. I have a good eye for detail and logic. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My greatest weakness has always been that I can overlook misused words and grammar if I get into the flow of reading. Like everyone, I can often see what I want to see rather than what is actually written, which means that I always have immediate biases to overcome when attempting to proofread. I also believe that my character writing is somewhat weak and that I tend toward stereotyped characterization and cliche heavy dialog. As such, I've put a great deal of effort into analyzing my characterization and I have improved it somewhat. I also feel that my long-range plotting can be somewhat weak because I tend toward a more immediate, spontaneous style which often overrides long-term planning. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
My tendency is toward action, fantasy and science fiction. My preferences are along the lines of Tolkien High-fantasy or the Robert Jordanesque, but I often run toward subtle science fiction and cerebral "Hannibal Lecter" type crime drama. I have been writing fanfic a lot lately, but my fanfic tends employ original characters. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I do not tend toward slash fic or out-of-character romance and I prefer to avoid romance that feels the need to be caustically sweet. Romance written independently of any other kind of substance is not my cup of tea and I avoid fic that is written exclusively to cross characters. I will read romance with true substance, say Romeo and Juliet written over the struggle of the Montague and Capulet families--but, just to see Romeo riding Juliet, no way. |
