Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta-reader, I seek to help younger, less experienced writers learn to improve their writing style. This means that sometimes, when I return a document, I will highlight things and ask the writer to figure out what went wrong instead of simply telling him/her what to fix. Be warned: I will be picky and critical. I do not personally attack writers, nor are any comments intended as such, but if there is something wrong with your story, you will be told about it in the interest of making your story better. If you are looking for a beta who simply says "Oh, that's awesome," I am not the right choice.
Generally, when sent material, I will try to get back to you within a day or two, unless I specifically warn you otherwise. I do reserve the right to stop beta-reading for a writer, but it is not one I expect that I will have to exercise often, if ever.
If you are contacting me to ask me to beta, please, please, PLEASE tell me what type of story you want me to look at. Is it a TRON fic? A Revan-travels-in-time-to-wreak-havoc story? An E/C? I'd like to know so I can tell if I am qualified to read your story. If it's already posted here, I would like a title as well so I can take a preliminary look at it. If you only tell me that you want me to beta, it doesn't help me at all.
If you have questions, feel free to PM me. My inbox is always open. :)

Star Wars knowledge: Anything surrounding the six films (Darth Vader is my specialty, as it were, so anything in his lifetime is a sure bet). Otherwise, I've played through KOTOR, I've read most of the NJO books, and all of LoTF (Invincible for the win!), plus miscellaneous books between those extremes. If you're not sure, ask.
Phantom of the Opera knowledge: Fire at will. ;) I've read the original, seen the musical, own the movie, read Kay's "Phantom" (and own a first-run copy), read Leroux, read "Phantom of Manhattan" and "Angel of the Opera" (POTO + Sherlock Holmes= wow), and have had exposure to several other minor versions, including the Wishbone version (which likely started it all...).
FullMetal Alchemist knowledge: I've seen all of FMA and FMA:Brotherhood, plus read a handful of the manga. Since much of this fandom appears to be slash, I don't think there'll be much call for my services.
Avatar: The Last Airbender knowledge: Watched all three books (Water, Earth, Fire). The movie was awful. At least get the pronunciation of your main character's name correct!
TRON: Fire at will! The only area I'm shaky on is the Evolution era, but that's hopefully going to be remedied soon. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Mechanics: I am good at picking up mistaken words (to, too, two, etc.) and giving my opinion on flow and description. I'm comfortable with British spellings and won't tell you to change to the American version.
Storytelling: If someone has a longer story and is worried about continuity, I generally can find those types of mistakes as well. If you need to know whether your story fits into established SW canon, I can likely give you an opinion on that as well. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Commas and colons. I freely admit that I tend to abuse them so I can't always tell if someone else is. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer stories that the author has obviously put some effort into. A slapdash job is not something I want to spend precious time and energy reading.
Generally, though, I am willing to give most everything a go. My favorite type of story to read is father-son interaction between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, and my favorite character to read about is Lord Vader in general, as no two authors write him the same way.
As far as POTO is concerned, I'm up for most anything, though the Phantom is my favorite character by far. That said, I'm not a rabid Raoul-hater nor a fanatic Phantom defender, so I can objectively read E/C, R/C, etc. Just try to make it believable.
If it's a TRON story and has either Rinzler or Tron himself in it and it meets the below, I'll probably read it. I'm obsessed right now... |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I will not, under any circumstances, read slash fiction. Period. End of discussion. I don't hate you for writing it, but it makes me incredibly uncomfortable to read it.
Anything that has a lot of "Sixth Commandment Breakage," as a friend likes to call it. Scenes of physical intimacy are not something I am comfortable reading, so I would be quite bad at editing them. |
