Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I will consider any Harry Potter, Avatar: The Last Airbender or Animorphs stories, as those are the fandoms that I have spent the most time looking at. I don't feel like I know the characters of other fandoms well enough to beta effectively.
I look for ways to improve the story on all levels, from broad things that span many chapters to the tiny grammar mistakes that make a single sentence sound off. I am honest and blunt and somewhat harsh, but only because I want your story to be the very best it can possibly be. I expect you to consider my suggestions, but not necessarily take every single one. It is your story, after all, not mine.
I strongly encourage you to get two or three betas for your story. Multiple opinions have always helped me write better stories, and multiple betas make up for each others weaknesses. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I tend to read and write darker stories. There are elements of humor in all of my stories and in those that I have favorited, but the overall theme is usually dark. The exception to this is one-shots, which can be anything, as long as they are still believable. Long stories in which there is no sadness or trials just aren't realistic. If your story does not feel realistic, one thing I will suggest is to add darker elements.
One of my favorite parts of writing is creating the characters. I love every part of it, and will do my best to help you create three-dimensional, believable characters, with strengths, faults, idiosyncrasies, pasts, and every other element that makes up a person. If your character is not real to you, what makes you think they'll feel real to your reader?
I am a grammar Nazi. I will nit-pick every grammar mistake. The exceptions are when it is done artistically (like sentence fragments for emphasis) or within dialogue when it is a character's way of speaking. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I tend to give my characters opinions that are very close to my own.
I am not very good at action sequences.
I am also extremely picky about cliches, too much so, which tends to limit what I can write. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I would prefer to beta Zuko/Katara and/or Sokka/Suki stories for Avatar, but it always depends.
For Harry Potter fics, I would prefer to beta stories with the canon pairings.
For Animorph, I would also prefer the canon pairings (Jake/Cassie, Tobias/Rachel). Basically, nothing AU.
I mentioned above that darker fics feel more real and believable. For this reason I would prefer to beta fics that are rated T or M, but it never hurts to ask me to look at your piece. There are plenty of well-done fics that are K or K+. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I will not beta anything with homosexual pairings. |
