Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
To all my curious browsers, thank you for taking the time to visit my profile. Now, let's get cracking, shall we? -grins- Though most of you people are probably looking for a beta in certain categories (*coughTwilightcough*), you can expect me to be flexible when concerning any categories you wish me to edit. As a soon-to-be-author, you can expect me to adapt to any challenge that you wish to fling at me. Please note that all further communication from me to you will be somewhat friendly, and I will NOT hesitate to use mature language. You got a problem with a bit of cussing? Then, either it's not your cup of tea or you're not even old enough to even consider writing said mature scenes. I don't have a preference when it comes to what story you want me to look over, but when concerning pairings... you're better off with someone else if you're looking for a yuri/ shojo-ai editor. Why, you ask? Please look over the "Not My Cup of Tea" section for further explaination. Yes, I tolerate canon pairings, hetero, yaoi, shounenai, and even slash as long as your story is interesting. If I don't know the characters to your story, I'll probably just look it up on Wikipedia (info-god, I tell you). And because your story is SO interesting, I'll force myself to dive into the plot of the manga, anime, book, movie, or cartoon. I'll even go look up the episodes on friggin' Youtube/ Veoh/ Crunchyroll. And if I send you any extra messages, please try to respond to them as they may be important. If you wish to contact me, please polietly state what your story is about (genre, summary of the plot, categories, characters, ect.), hand over or direct me over to your story you want edited (optional: provide a summary/ a brief snippet from a chapter), and stay in touch to check the progress of the beta-ing. Also, please state CLEARLY what you want me to do for you. I don't want you just sending me a PM with your username, document, and a brief "good day." I want you to tell me if you would want me to go over your stories and edit them directly in the document, or provide you suggestions on what to improve on. How would I know what editing process you want me to use on you? I need to know your expectations of me. I'm so flexible I'm usually at a loss at how to approach you guys for my services. Also, please be a good author and kindly add "Betaed by _" somewhere in your final drafts posted on FanFiction. I don't want all my hard work going into waste just for you take the credit for yourself and boast that your writing's the "AWESOME-EST STORY, EVAH!" No, just... no. I will tell you if I accept your request as soon as I read it. That being said, if I don't see it on the same day you sent it, don't feel frustrated. Just be patient. Anyways, it is usually because of the little overview you've graciously provided me that leads me into accepting your requests. If I'm hooked, then I assure you that I'll devote my life into making your story better. Keep in mind I place the care of your story and reviewers high above your feelings. I TREAT IT AS IF YOUR STORY WAS MINE. That means any mistakes will be caught by me, and I will be anal on making you correct any that I spot. I won't give a damn if you get your feelings hurt. If I can get it through your thick skull head, then I'm content with playing the bad guy. Also, don't be afraid to poke and prod if any questions arise. I won't bite, promise! The only reason why I accepted your request is because I want to see your growth as a writer. It doesn't matter if you suck donkey's butt. I will be there every step of the way so that you can improve in something you love doing. I will be harsh at times with my criticisms, but not before listing some of the best qualities I find in your story. There's also one more thing I ask of you before you choose me to be your beta. Please, at least once, thank me. A simple "thanks" will go a long way. I'm even willing to stay up all night drinking six towering mugs of black, bitter coffee if that's what it takes for me to edit your story before the deadline. I know I'm repeating myself, but I really would like to work with someone that is considerate of a beta's feelings. I know what you're thinking. You don't know me, and I don't know you. So what's the whole point of this request? Well, ask yourself this: why do you need a beta so badly? Is it because you can't write worth shit? Or is it because you want a person's honest opinion about your story? The good thing about me is that I don't flatter your ass and give you half-assed advice. I tell the truth and I shovel it in by the boatload. I'm not afraid to speak my mind if that's what it takes to make you a better writer. Honestly though, just having you say a meager "thanks" once in a while would make my day. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Where to begin... let's see, should you want a beta that excels at making the characters of your story "in character", I'm your beta! Also, if you wish for your chapters to be longer, then I'm your best pick. I'm somewhat of a professional at lengthening other writers' stories (coughcough). I'm skilled at supernatural/ paranormal-based stories, romance, the "M rated" scenes (though I have yet to post a sex scene due to the snail pace of my own creations), angst and tragedy themes (it comes naturally for me), and anything you would expect from a full-on book. I can draw out scenes to place more emotion into them rather than a model with a recent Botox job. Yes, bad simile but oh well. I'll have better ones once I'm in the mood, haha. My spelling skills are quite excellent if I'm typing at a slow pace. And yes, believe it or not, I'm a perfectionist. I will look over your stories not once, not twice, but FIVE times until I'm satisfied with the end result (I'm willing to pull an all nighter just to edit your brilliant story). Also, if you're trying to make a certain scene funny and you're doing a piss-poor job at it, I can usually tell. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
One of my traits that I consider to be at fault in the art of writing is that if I'm bored at editing your chapter, I'm sorry but I have a short attention span. Thus leading to your story being edited in a rush. I will tell you if your chapter was boring and because it was such a bore, I simply rushed the editing. If it dampens your spirits, oh well. I'm just helping you grow up as a writer. But please don't be mistaken. I will point out what is wrong with that chapter and then leave it to you to figure it out. You're the author, not me. I can only guide you close to literary perfection. Another one of my flaws is that I can be somewhat blunt. Oh, I'll leave some nice commentaries along the way if I feel like I was being a major "S.O.B." during the editing process, but don't expect me to be like, "OMG, -insertnamehere- LOL! Go -insertnamehere-! I can totally see -insertnamehere- doing this! LAWL!" Ugh. If your "-insertnamehere-" is in character, usually I will give a passing comment on the spectacular job you did keeping the characters "in character" if it's noteworthy, but that's usually it. I don't like interrupting your chapter with my personal comments unless necessary. Why? You have your reviewers to do the job for you. Unless you request me to provide nice remarks on certain paragraphs because you're such a shy little thing and you like nice remarks, then fine. I will do so with friendly, professional conduct. Also, it's best to set a specific deadline for each chapter so I don't slack off, and somehow forget that your story even existed. Just to let you know, my grammar is a tad off (but I'm improving day by day). Therefore, there will be cases where I'm like "RAWR, IT SHOULD BE 'THIS', NOT 'THAT'." Then you might be like "NUH-UH. IT'S 'THAT' INSTEAD OF 'THIS'. -shows me proof-" Then I will apologize, and back off. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Oh kill joy... let's see what can I say and still make it summarized? Hmm, I prefer beta-ing shounenai/ slash/ yaoi stories that are somewhat interesting. Canon straight couples are fine with me, so I accept your challenge. Just to make one thing clear, I cannot promise you the best results for either one of these two types unless I support that certain pairing as well. However, if you want action scenes, oh boy did you make the right choice! Just uhh... please don't make me edit sci-fi action scenes that would probably make the world population fall to the ground snoring. I can make it better but since I abhor sci-fi, I would start to regret ever agreeing to beta your story. I'm not such a big fan of the fandom. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Aah, yes. Never ever, EVER send me stories without the pretense of a critical plot, and if there's one thing I hate more than stories without a plot... it's crack. Please don't send me stories of crack pairings (ex. Voldemort/ Dobby), parodies, and stories that only deal in bashing a character and expect me to work my magic. Unless you can work it and bring me over to the dark side, then you're probably better off with someone else. Also, I will accept pairings and genres I'm not really into just as long as it doesn't cross the border of pure, ridiculous insanity. And please don't even bother asking me to beta a yuri or shojo-ai story. It'll just make me a bit woozy to the stomach. I just cannot guarantee my utter best when editing Girls Love stories. If it's a side pairing, okay then, but main? No thank you. With Het or Slash, it's fairly easy for me to detect flaws and pinpoint where to make corrections. I don't know why but it just does. With yuri though, I get thrown off. Good day, fair lady (or gentleman) and never think of sending me those stories of yours that I've specifially stated "not my cup of tea." |
