Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I love writing, I love to read OTHER peoples' writing, and I love to CRITIQUE said peoples' writings. I have a motto that I go by when beta-reading "You asked for my opinion, but you DIDN'T ask me to sugar-coat it." So I won't. I'm harsh and blunt, and just because it's your first fanfiction doesn't mean I'll be all nice and beat around the bush. Oh no. I'll say what I feel and how you take it is entirely up to you. But, on the other hand, I really don't like being so 'mean' all the time. So all of my compliments are entirely from the heart, as are my critiques.
I'll be glad to help you if you need it, and I love to debate. So if there's a problem, we can talk it over and find the best solution together.
My own writing style is... unique, not completely developed yet, it's more of a mesh of almost all the writers I've ever read, and yes, that does include fanfiction writers too. That's why beta-reading is something I enjoy. I learn a lot from reading other people's works and the like. I'll read anything, but that absolutely DOES NOT mean I will beta anything. I'll review it, not beta it. So please, read the "Preferred" section along with the "Not My Cup Of Tea" section before asking me to beta anything. More information about what I will/will not beta in the said two sections.
I've got a multi-sided personality, and though I TRY my HARDEST not to take out my emotions on other people, I'll occasionally slip. So if there's a day where I seem uncommonly harsh/nice, try not to mind/get too pleased with yourself. Most likely, I'll be back to my somewhat normal self the following day, and you'll either be relieved, or disappointed, depending on the situation. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Grammatical mistakes TICK ME OFF as do spelling ones. So if you're a person with terrible grammar and spelling, either: You're in LUCK! Because I can help you with it. Or: You're going to HELL. Because I will bug you and bug your about your grammar and spelling until they are PERFECT. Chat-speak hurts my eyes, brain and almost every other part of my body, so if you DO have chat-speak in your story, expect it to be GONE by the time I'm finished beta-ing it.
Feelings and emotions are always such a nice thing to get down on paper, physically or virtually. So if you've got a story full of heartfelt moments, wonderful! I'm here to help you make them as full of emotions as there can possibly be in one scene/chapter. On the contrary, if you've got a story full of heartbreak and death, great! I'm here to help you make all of your readers sob shamelessly as they read the scene/chapter. So emotions, feelings... anything along the lines of that, I can help with.
If you have a cannon in your story, which you most likely will considering the fact that it is a fanfiction, it's of the utmost importance to keep them In Character. I can help with this UNDER THE CONDITION that I've seen/read about/played the game with/etc... the character. I can't help if it's someone in a series I haven't even heard about. If you make a request from a series I haven't seen/read/played/etc I'll either put it on hold till I HAVE gotten some information on the series, or reject it. But be warned that if it IS put on hold, it might be a MIGHTY long while before I get back to it. I like to take my time with things, and analyze the series before I write/beta a fanfiction about it. So just a warning there, and if you didn't read it because you skipped this section completely, then you're out of luck. Too bad for you, you just won't know when the time comes, will you? |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Action sequences were NEVER my niche, though I can spot a good one when I see it. If you've got a BAD one, on the other hand, don't expect too much feedback on it. Still, I'll try my best to help where I can, and I apologize here in advance if I completely fail at it. I love to read action though, and I'll review it. Maybe a few pointers here and there, but like I said above, don't expect too much.
Sex scenes. Again, I'll read them, and I can tell if it's good or not, but don't expect too much feedback. I tolerate these, but like them much less than action sequences. Though, again, I'll help where I can. But if your story is PWP, then I'm afraid asking me to beta would be completely pointless, as I like stories that actually contain plot lines. Then again, a few crack-fics once in a while is fun too. Just depends on the crackiness and how much you're willing to put into that said crackiness.
GIRLY drama. -shudders- Well, I tolerate them about as much as I do sex scenes, but I'm somewhat less likely to give you compliments on this. I mean sure, there are a couple of good drama fics out there, but please, I can't write high-school drama, so what makes you think I can beta it that well? Jealousy bodes pretty well with me though, as does INTENSE DRAMA. But average everyday OMG-I-did-not-just-see-my-boyfriend-talk-to-another-girl kinda drama... no. Definitely not. Actually, to put it simple, if you've got one of these scenes in your story, I'll: read it, and depending on whether it's good or not, leave it just as is, or completely delete it from the chapter.
Chat-speak. If your story is/contains people in a chatroom, using abbreviations and stuff like "LOL" or "TTYL" or "l8trz", then don't even bother sending that chapter to me. Just don't. I will FLAME IT. And trust me when I say, I don't go easy on people who don't have correct grammar/punctuation/spelling. I just don't. I don't even TOLERATE it. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Like I said above, I'll read anything, but that doesn't mean I'll beta anything. Go through the "My Strengths" section and the "My Weaknesses" section and match them up to your story first before asking me to beta it. But first just let me say this: I read books, I watch anime, I read manga, I play video games. I DO NOT watch TV or much movies. Nor do I read much 'comics' other than Japanese/Asian ones, other than Garfield of course XD. I love that cat.
So I'd most likely accept your fanfiction from a book/anime/video game faster than I will a TV show or a movie.
Other than that, there's not much left to say about what I prefer. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Things in this section is much the same to the "My Weaknesses" section, so just because it's here, doesn't mean I won't beta it. It just means that I won't be as GOOD at beta-ing it.
TV shows and Movies along with Chat-speak, and girly drama. The last two and I don't get along very well. The first two, I'll look into it, but it might take a WHILE. 'While' here meaning "A ridiculously long time".
Yaoi and Yuri. Don't get me wrong. I like Yaoi (not so much Yuri), actually 'like' would be an understatement XD. 'Madly addicted' to Yaoi, would sum up the picture better. And you have my friend to blame for that particular piece of corruption. Seeing as she's the one that got me into Boy-boy love (its SOOOOO CUTE!). BUT, I'm no so good at beta-ing it. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to read it and perhaps review it, but I just CAN NOT beta it. Sorry... and it's puzzling because I read so much of it. XD |
