Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I nit-pick. Details are key. I do consider grammar to be important, but I am mostly referring to details that effect characterization, plot points, continuity, and theme. I worry about the flow of a story and expect minor things to either tie in with what you're trying to accomplish or at least not stand out in a negative fashion. Unless your poor grammar is glaring and causes the story to be incoherent I consider it to be of secondary importance. I am willing to interact with you and make suggestions regarding plot/characters/whatever but won't unless you ask. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm best at checking stories for continuity and logic. If your story doesn't make sense or you've contradicted yourself that's the fist thing I'll notice. I tend to pay a lot of attention to small details. I consider characterization to be one of the most important parts of a story. If your characters are not consistent, motivated, or fully developed I will call you on it. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I can't spell. If Window's spell checking doesn't pick it up, I won't either. Unless, of course, it's something like reed VS read. Studying German has only made my spelling in English worse. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I'd prefer friendship fics. I think that there aren't enough of those out there. I'm also a sucker for angst.
I love AU fics. I'm a big fan of "what if?" type stories. I love seeing the thousand of different ways that things could have gone differently if one decision was changed or one relationship altered slightly. I am NOT a fan of fics that are AU solely to introduce an OC or pair a certain couple together. I'm not a shipper and I have little patience for shippers. If you want to explore how Character B affects Character A's life and personality, fine, but don't put a non-canon couple together because you think they're 'soul mates' or some such nonsense. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
No romances, please. I don't mind fluffy one-shots but anything longer has to have an actual plot to it for me to be able to stand reading it, let alone re-reading it. I'd prefer not to read slash but am willing to, so long as there is an actual story and you aren't just getting two characters together to make out. (That actually goes for het too.) ABSOLUTELY NO INCEST STORIES!!! Eww. And no porn. And nothing that's been done three-thousand times already. I'd say no Mary Sues, but it's my job to make sure you don't create any, isn't it?;) |
