Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am always reading some fanfiction or another, and I write whenever I have a new idea. I am very thorough when it comes to beta-ing; I like to go sentence-by sentence, looking for things that can be improved on and fixed. I never change the original writing. Instead, I leave the original as-is and write my comments and suggestions as seperate paragraphs (usually in a different color) in order to make it easier for the author to revise the work as he or she desires. You always have a choice when it comes to taking my advice. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm very good a picking up grammar issues and finding places where the sentence doesn't flow. I encourage detail and descriptions, and I enjoy helping people with characterization and settings. I am very thorough, and I analyze every detail that needs it. Keep in mind that I am very critical; I don't sugar-coat my comments. Anything I say will be my exact opinion, and if my comments offend you in any way, then that means that you need to learn to take criticism.br /

If I love the story, I will say so, then offer a few pointers to help you make it even more awesome. If I hate it, I will say so, then help you improve it, if you wish me to.
One other thing: I can speak/read a little Japanese. I am nowhere near fluent, but I know enough that I can help you if your story includes dialogue in Japanese. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I tend to go on for a while. I am nit-picky and my comments for one sentence can go on for half a page sometimes. I often treat stories as if they are mine and I tend to comment as if they were so, which, again, means that I WILL be harsh. Also, my biggest fault is that I take a long time with things. It can take me a few weeks to beta a single chapter, but keep in mind: I WILL do a good job with it. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer stories of a medium-to-long length, with a lot of detail and well developed characters and settings. Fantasy, drama, romance, and adventure are my favorites. There must be lots of conflict and excitment, but not an overload amount.br /

If your story does not have these things, then I am more than happy to help you get to that point. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I don't like stories with chapters that are too short, unless they are drabble stories (and if you want a beta for a drabble story, you'd best looks elsewhere, as drabbles aren't my area of expertise). I'm willing to beta longer chapters, but it will take me much longer. I will also not read stories that involve Mary Sues, unless it is meant to be funny.br /

And do try to keep me entertained. You don't have to (and please don't change your story in order to hold just my interest), but the more into the story I am, the better job I will do with beta-ing. Plus, entertaining and exciting stories get better reactions from readers, so think of having me as your beta being your story's trial run.br /

In short, if you can impress me, you can impress just about anyone. |
