Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm a card-carrying Grammar Nazi, and I like to see a little variety with regards to verbs. I prefer to initially work with punctuation and basic grammar, then run any major suggestions or changes past the actual author before applying them to the story/chapter at hand. Either I can make the changes myself or, if the author prefers, I can suggest them and where they should be placed via italicized parenthesis. I also like to give a review with every beta-reading, though I can upload them separately. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My greatest strength lies with proper grammar and spelling. I also watch for issues such as tense change, and for the overuse of specific words or phrases. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My biggest weakness is that I am a stickler for characters remaining in-character. Unless it's supposed to be a parody or the characters are intentionally OOC, I'm going to repeatedly indicate that the author should pay attention to their characterization. Also, I have no patience whatsoever for L337 or lolcats-speak. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I'll beta-read almost anything, so long as it's a fandom with which I am familiar. I don't think I could fully appreciate, and thus help improve, a fic involving characters and situations I know nothing about. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
The only fics I really have an issue with reading, and thus beta-reading, are slash-fics and yaoi/yuri. As stated previously, I'm a stickler for keeping characters IC, so unless there's some kind of canon proof that this or that character could potentially be a different sexual orientation, I'd prefer not to read something portraying them as such. |
