Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've actually never done much beta reading before-mostly, I was just a fact-finder for friends, which means combing through an entire series to find small details-but I like to think I'd be of SOME help. I won't prod you about storyline or characters much, I'll just do my grammar and spelling job, but if you'd like, I can also insert some little notes here and there on how your characterisation is, if you've repeated words in an un-stylistic way, or even on different adjectives/sentence structures you could use. But, yes. Don't think that I'm one of those people who will bash or rage on you because you made A fall in love with C when she should be dating B. Of course not. It's /your/ story. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm best at angst and non-formal stories. As in, my own stories are generally very stupid and sad. I suck at grammar in the way that I don't CARE if "is" is a verb or not. I'm not gonna start flaming you because you used the wrong phrase or clause or fragment or whatever else textbooks say are wrong. If it's distracting or just plain wrong, I'll change it, but I'm not going to make your fic into an essay. As for genre, I don't work too well, personally, with happy things and mysterious things. Mostly because I suck at them. But if you're looking for heartwrenching or slightly comical, I like to think I could be of help. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
As I said above, Mystery and Happiness. I also don't work well with Friendship-since my head blurs lines-and formal speech. It's one thing to not be buddy-buddy with the reader, it's another to make me think I'm reading a literary analysis. Also, for the heavier/closer-to-M stories, I'm not too fantastic with awkwardness. I'll work through it, but if someone walks in one someone else, I don't know how close attention I can pay. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Angst! Romance! Tragedy! Anything that you can place into an emo bucket, I probably will enjoy. I also enjoy parodies, though. And cute things. I have a nice /little/ pink place in my heart for fluff. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
You don't need to worry about guro or squick fics with me, thank you. If you have something that's controversial, I don't mind reading it for you without a judging eye. I've been on the internet. Nothing else will send me to hell worse and if you're going too, well, at least we'll know someone.
Getting back on topic. I won't read overly-awkward things (I mean this as in sexytimes is occurring and then oops. C walks in. This can be made worse if A and B are same gender.) and bash fics. If you don't like a character, don't kill them just because you want them dead. It's mean, and I probably like that person. |
