Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'll generally read the story over once, to get an idea of it, then start looking for any errors or places that might need fixing. I tend to keep a sharp eye out for spelling and grammar and whether or not characters are too OOC for the purposes of the story. Please keep in mind that when I send back my corrections or additions for a story, these are partly personal opinion and I won't be offended if you don't like them. Also, keep in mind that I don't make any editing changes without putting serious thought into them first. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I look at spelling, grammar, and am pretty good at noting/remembering minute details of the fandom in question (if it's one I know well). I also like to make sure the story flows well, and isn't too choppy or that the forward momentum of the plot is stalling. I'm well-versed in the Firefly/Serenity and Tin Man fandoms, and pretty good with Harry Potter. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I can be wordy at times, and might make your story longer than necessary. But feel free to cut what you don't like. There are some romantic pairings in my specified fandoms that I just don't do, but please don't let that discourage you. I'm willing to make exceptions to that personal rule in the interests of beta-ing. And if I seem to be really harsh or critical, I'm not actually meaning to be. I tend to be quite frank when beta-ing, and over the impersonal online communication of this site, comments or suggestions that I have might come out harsher than they are intended to be. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer comedy, drama, angst or not too fluffy romance and even the occassional crossover, but I'll beta for just about anything. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I can't beta fluff. I like to read it at times, but I just can't seem to beta it well. I also tend to avoid Mary Sues (which annoy me), rape/noncon and Mpreg, and stories that don't really seem to be going anywhere, as that tends to frustrate me as a reader. |
