Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm a professional editor. That means I get paid to fix people's writing. That means I'll rearrange commas, chop up sentences for readability and most certainly fix misused vocabulary. If there are consistent problems, I'm quite likely to send it back and ask you to please fix them before I proceed further on in your story. I'm not often nice to the writers I'm paid to critique, I imagine I'm less nice if I'm doing it for free. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Beside basic spelling/grammar/punctuation, I will read a story for continuity, storyline and word usage. I'm not interested in telling you what you should write ... but I am a big fan of keeping the English language as a tool for effective communication. I *will* let you know when I've enjoyed something, when a particular idea or turn of phrase is effective or evocotive. I will also tell you when I don't like something. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
To be honest, the better writer you are, the worse of a beta I become. If I'm enjoying a story so much that I'm caught up in it, I'll generally forget that I'm supposed to be beta-ing and just sit back and enjoy the story. I *do* try to remain somewhat effective. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I love to beta in all of my fandoms - anything by BioWare (NWN, JE, KotOR I and II, M.E.) and occasionally Oblivion. I will also consider other fandoms, but I will say if I know too little about it to be of any use to you. I tend to enjoy darker, more mature writing, but am absolutely thrilled to come across well-done humour. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
If your writing contains anything that resembles "OMG!" or "plzthx" or, really, any self-indugent, Mary Sue-ish emo-fapping, I will send it back. (Edit: I will also ignore any beta-requests that include the aformentioned 'Net-speak' - incuding the use of 'u' or 'ur' instead of 'you' or 'your')I'm not a huge fan of slash, but can enjoy it if it's well done. |
