Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Before I begin to make comments, I will read and re-read your entry a minimum of five times as an audience. Then, I shall tackle the work from an analytical angle. I shall organise my responses into five categories: Narrative Thoughts, Genre Thoughts, Characterisation Thoughts, Overall Clarity of the Piece, and Miscellaneous Comments. That's about it, really... |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I feel my strengths lie best in Narrative structure, and my extended lexis. Also, I feel I've finally got to grips with "showing, not telling", that is to say describing a situation rather than just labelling the fact that there is a situation. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My biggest weakness, I feel, has to be the fact that I have trouble putting words into the characters' mouths, as it were. As such, accent, dialect and ellision often do not feature that greatly in my work. However, I feel I am more than capable of spotting it in other's work. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I write mainly (if not purely) slash/yaoi stories (for the unenlightened among us: stories with male/male content). Therefore, I feel better equipped to beta slash/yaoi stories, although I am willing on occasion to read heterosexual or yuri/femslash stories, if you ask nicely. xD |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I have no big restrictions on the stories I'd beta, other than I'm not a big fan of "doom'n'gloom tragedy 'slash-my-wrists-until-I'm-noticed'" stories. Also, stream-of-consciousness style stories make my head ache after a while, so that's an "only in small doses" restriction! |
