Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As far as beta reading goes, I read passages provided several times, taking care to not only watch for spelling and grammatical errors (because they're my downfall too), but also for flow. Other factors that I look for are plot flow, character development/stability (depending on which is needed), and sentence structure. I'm not cruel when pointing out these errors, mostly because people point them out to me all the time, and I believe that proper respect should be given to those who attempt fanfiction. Anyone who is willing to have their works looked at and scrutinized deserves respect, and asking for help only makes them more so. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I read fantasy and sci-fi well, mostly because I know a lot of the science and logistics behind it. Also: I'm told that I'm good with descriptions. I can make a good scene in five minutes flat, and make it seem real. But just because I do these things doesn't mean I'm not willing to go into different genres and writing styles and learn some new things. So don't be afraid to ask me about help even if your fiction isn't in those two genres or that descriptive, because I'll always be willing to do my best to help you. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I have many weaknesses, though punctuation, spelling (in rushed cases), and action scenes seem to be my downfall. Punctuation is hard for me because I write a bit complexly, and I sometimes end up punctuating what only makes sense to the voice reading aloud in my head. If this happens, let me know. Spelling is also another thing that seems not to flow as well with me. Not because I'm illiterate, but because sometimes I get so into my writing that I miss things (mostly minor) that are misspelled. I know what the passage is supposed to say, so I often skim over what it does in fact say in replacement of what I think it says. And action scenes, despite loving them dearly when they're inside my head, cause me to loathe them as soon as I try to type them out. I can do them fairly well, but it's a long, awkward, halting process for me. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
As far as beta-ing goes, I don't have too much preference. I'm willing to do just about anything, so long as it's not explicit. (And if you explain the situation and plot purpose I might still agree.) I'm pretty loose about these things, so don't be afraid to ask. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Um... like I said, I'm not fond of explicit stuff. More in the sensual sense than the blood and gore sense. I can handle gore and blood and all that angsty stuff, but romance confuses me to a point. So if I agree to beta such a story, take into consideration that I am by no means a romantic genius, and will probably not understand some of the more... lustful tidbits. (Better to just do them yourself and let me do whatever else you need.) |
