Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I have decided to give this a try, mostly because I like talking about writing almost as much as I like writing. I'm 24, have spent some time in college level writing courses, have won some awards and honorable mentions in high school and college, so technically, on paper, I "know how to write" and you can be assured of that. Fanfiction is something relatively new to my repertoire, but I have gotten really interested over the past few years. I love characters, and I think using those that belong to someone else is a great way to try out new techniques, or ambitious techniques, in writing to better your background without mucking around in the first twenty-thousand words telling the reader all about who they're going to read about.
I like writers. As people. I think that real writers are the kind who want to get better and that the best way to do so is to talk to other writers. Learn how their brain works and incorporate those tricks with how your own works to bring you to a new level. I think everyone can write and everyone can create, but it takes a writer to want to do it better and better each time. I don't get hung up on punctuation, I think cliches can be well used, I like fragments if they make a point, so if you want a text book perfect piece, I am not your beta. If you want to think about characters, write the way they talk or think, really debate if the bizarre plot turn you have made is plausible even a few dimensions away, then I am here for you. I like to look at styles rather than comma rules. I like to know that characters are behaving properly (or improperly if the situation calls for it) more than telling you to "go back to third grade: their there they're. your you're. where wear."
I can do those things, and I notice them, but I don't really think that's what this kind of writing is about. Anyone who knows how to write can see those things if they slow down and look for them. I can slow down for you if that's what you want, but I'm really more interested in how and why you think this way, and how you're portraying it.
I have checked off a lot of specific categories in my profile, but I'll read anything. Those are just the things I know better, until i got too lazy to keep checking up on them. I am open to anything, but anything in those categories is something I am more familiar with. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
dialogue is my strongest area, characterization, realistic flow, making sure things make sense. Character development, generally, and over all sense of "would this happen given these circumstances? Sure, I think so, and if not, I will write a way to justify it."
I have a unique voice and style, or so I'm told, and I like to see that. I like helping people develop their voice, or develop that of a character. I like people, real ones and fictional ones. If you want character continuity, a plot that makes sense, and someone to tell you if something is ridiculous, or ridiculously awesome, look no further. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I know the basics, I understand them, and I can correct them if that's what you want, but I am more interested in how good a story is than I am in if all the words are spelled exactly right. If you want a knit-picker, I am probably not the beta for you, but if you want someone to fall in love with your story too, and discuss every aspect with you, you have found the right beta. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I'm pretty open. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I don't care for gore much, but it doesn't bother me. There are some plot lines I think are "kind of lame" but I read them all anyway, and something that is "kind of lame" merits discussion as to why and can be a learning process for you and for me too. I'm not a yaoi fan, but I'll read it. I feel like those pieces are typically out of character, and it's why I avoid them. Unless those involved are gay guys in whatever they came from, then touche. Bring it on. I like a challenge. I hope you do too. |
