Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I love reading fiction/nonfiction and helping people out with their stories. I'm currently taking a creative writing course right now so I'm learning a lot about critiquing someone's work. When I critique I point out all the good stuff first, then the places where you need to go to work. I try to be as fair and open-minded as possible. If I don't give a lot of advice, it usually means I like the work so far and there isn't much I'd change about it.
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm pretty darn good with dialogue and writing in both 1st and 3rd person pov. I'm also good at thinking of good hooks that'll bring the reader in. I can also help with plot development, details, and giving characters more, well, character. I'll also point out ways you can show the emotions & actions, rather than tell them.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I absolutely SUCK at poetry. And I'm not the person to go to if your story has "hidden meanings" and "secret messages". And I advise you to not come to me if you need help thinking up a title.
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I generally prefer stories that are a bit original ((there aren't 50 million plots just like it where only the characters and setting are changed)), I like stories that have a plot, that use vivid details and proper language ((I don't mean no cussing, but if your character is 10 s/he should sound like a 10 year old)). I love reading stories where the characters are somewhat relateable ((i.e., they puke at the sight of blood, try to kick a door down and end up stubbing their toe, etc.))
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I don't like stories that go like this: day one they meet, day two they fall in love, the end. I don't like infallible characters, meaning they could never be harmed or do any harm and are perfect in every way. I don't like way out there abilities and events, like the hero suddenly appears out of no where and magically attains the ability to jump 50 million stories to save the damsel just before the pteredactyl gobbles her up ((or something like that)). Unless it can be explained and fabricated really well. I typically don't like reading stories that combine two different stories ((slash fiction?)), or dark and humorless stuff, but I'll give it a try if you REALLY need a betareader.
