Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta-reader, I believe in honesty. I’m not going to tell you “this chapter was great!” if it wasn’t, I’m not going to sugarcoat what I think. This doesn’t mean I’ll tear your writing apart, and it doesn’t mean I’ll change your writing to a ridiculous degree. I like adding my notes at the end of my beta telling you what could be improved and things you should watch out for (habit-writing, etc). I believe in ‘always being there’ for your author – if I say I’ll beta read your fiction, I won’t say “I’ll do this next week” or “I’ll do this when I get around to it”; if I say I’m doing it, I’m doing it... and I expect the same level of commitment from you (no pressure or anything! ;)) If you want my beta-reading services I expect you to be open to what others have to say, because I’ll always be constructive. I want to help making fanfiction.net a more enjoyable place, for author and beta alike. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
If I had to pick a specific “beta trait” I consider myself good at... I’ll have to go with punctuation and cleaning dialogues. I can easily detect poor transitions and excessive use of commas (something I am guilty of myself when I write, sad to say). I’m also pretty good at adding fillers: if/when conversations don’t flow and tend to turn into “he said”, “she said”, “he said”, “she said”, I’m pretty good at adding texture to dialogue. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I’m not much of a fact checker, to be honest. Unless your story is from a universe I already know I can’t say I know how to tell you your facts are off, but I’m guessing that’s completely normal for any beta reader... I still think this doesn’t mean I can’t beta your story if it’s outside what I know – you’ll just have to do your own fact checking. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I can't really say I have a problem with certain types of stories. Of course, it helps if your story is from a universe I already know (main areas: Harry Potter, Dragonlance, Lord of The Rings, Smallville, World of Warcraft, but there's many more I know well enough to proof read fully)... but I wouldn't say it's a requirement. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
If your story is NC-17 I might have some trouble beta'ing it, but it comes down to context I think. Not saying I refuse to do it, and I can handle doing it for some chapters, but if your fiction is 25 chapters of porn... not my cup of tea. |
