Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've never actually been a professional beta before, but I have a lot of friends on this site who send me things through MSN when they want opinions. I really want to give it a go, as fics with bad grammar really irritate me (although that's somewhat hypocritical, as I'm known for ridiculous typing errors myself) and the less there are on this site, the better. :)
If you want to send me anything, please proof-read for basic mistakes first, and tell me what you want me to scrutinise for you, otherwise anything goes. I should get it done in a few days, unless I'm inundated by that evil known as homework.
Send it to my email address (which can be found on my main profile), with a few notes on exactly what you want me to check for. I would rather beta for people who want advice on their plot and/or characterisation, but if you want help with grammar, etc, that's fine.
Other than that, I'm not fussy about rules. Betas should be helpful, yes, but you really don't want me breathing down your neck and screaming at you, do you? |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My major strength is definitely knowing the canon and understanding the characters as JK Rowling put them forward, so if that's the area you want help in, I'll definitely be an asset. I'm also an excellent speller. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm not very good with semi colons vs. commas (hence my love of the spell-checker in Microsoft Word), but other than that... Yes, I am only in high school, but I'm a straight A English student who is rarely found without her nose in a book, so don't let my age sway your opinion. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
- Remus/Tonks
- Anything from the Black Family/MWPP era (especially Sirius and or Lily/James)
- OBHWF (One Big Happy Weasley family) fics
I would prefer to read drama/angst fics, as long as they fit in with my preferred characters, but romance, humour and friendship/family fics work just as well with me. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Don't bother if you:
-Bash Peter Pettigrew in your fic
-Think that Hermione/Any Slytherin should have "teh hottest sex"
-Can't tell the difference between there/their/they're or two/too/to
-Write slash, other than Albus/Gellert, because that, people, is called canon.
-Write smut.
This is in no way meant to be harsh, but I really don't want to beta these things, and it's easier for both of us if you just don't send them to me in the first place. |
