Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I usually read the story and check it over for spelling/grammar mistakes, and fix a few words and description if the author agrees.
Before beta-ing a story, I would appreciate it if the plot is described to me. I want to get a basic understanding of the story first before I read it so there is no confusion in the future. But if there are, please explain it to me. I can't possibly understand EVERYTHING.
Be sure to tell me if you're not going to be writing chapters for a story I'm beta-ing, so I don't have to wonder whether or not you're alive if you don't give me a chapter for 6 months. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Mostly grammar/spelling, and adding description to a story. I can also provide ideas if you need any, and I'm okay with keeping people "in character." Though for the Pokemon anime, I can't help much with anything after May left, because I have never watched episodes after that. I don't know if this is a strength, but I use some (simple!) Japanese in my fics at times. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
As previously mentioned, I've only watched about 4 or 5 episodes for the Sinnoh season of Pokemon, so I don't really know much about Dawn or co., but I could always look up their biographies online.
I have occasional flaws in my own writing too, especially with spelling, since I have a tendency to type to fast and overlook flaws on Notepad when I proof-read it. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Pokemon, Gakuen Alice (!) and Warriors, especially shippings/pairs, and anything relating to action/adventure or made-up characters. I absolutely LOVE Kamichama Karin, Full Moon wo Sagashite and Harvest Moon, but I don't have much experience writing them (even though I want to someday), only reading the manga/playing the games. Ditto for Mermaid Melody. But for Gakuen Alice, let's make a special exception...besides, a future story is going to be in that category.
One thing though: I despise the last few seasons of the Pokemon anime, even though I still like the characters, because of the quality and plot, which repeats itself over and over and over. I'd beta humor fics too. Laughing is good for you once in a while and helps relieve stress. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Chatroom fics? They make my eyes hurt, give me a headache, and half of the time, I cannot understand a single word the story is saying. So, no.
Do you overuse the word "like" and/or "you know"? Like, I really want to help you beta your fic, you know, but, um, like, since you can't talk in proper English, I, like, can't help you. Gomen.
And I would not, under NO CIRCUMSTANCE, beta yaoi/yuri or M-rated fics. I'm still young, and I want to keep the fraction of the innocence I have left. |
