Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've never really done any type of beta-reading before, but from looking at some of the critique I've received about my own stories, I think I'd be pretty good at it. My aim in general for beta-reading is to look out mainly for spelling errors, grammatical errors and proper punctuation, and checking the flow of words to ensure that the sentence structure is well understood. I'm also very picky about using identical words to describe things, and tend to shy away from generic bland words to describe things, like blue, or red, or pretty. I just believe that there are better words with more feeling to describe these things in better detail. I'm pretty busy, and I write my own stories too. I don't think I'd be available at all hours of the day to check out a story as I am in college, but I often slack and tend to come back to the site anyway, so I'd be happy to look at any story. Just make sure that you've done your best and edited as best as you can prior to submitting it to me. I won't do the work for you, and I won't write your story for you, but I can point out characterization and look at some key details of the story. Maybe even add a couple of ideas for you to use or two. If I do something like that, please make sure to credit me in your work. That's all I ask. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Grammar, tense usage, punctuation, sentence structure, possibly even properly fixing the flow of the story. I also tend to go very overboard with description. I really like painting a picture with words; the reader needs to know that your characters aren't completely naked in a white, blank wasteland. Add some detail! |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
While I don't really say this to come off as any sort of snob, I'm not particularly sure about my own weaknesses. I think I do tend to view other's works with a very critical eye, and often compare others skill to my own. I also can be somewhat harsh without trying to, but I'm sure you wouldn't have asked for a beta-reader if you didn't want that kind of critique, would you? |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I'd prefer to beta anything in the Anime/Manga or Video Game category. It's about the only thing I prefer really. Yuri, Yaoi, Harem, Mecha, Shoujo, Shounen, whatever works. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I refuse to beta any story involving any sort of explicit theme. When I say explicit, I mean like going into REALLY vivid detail about what the characters are like... doing to each other. I don't mind subtle action or implied themes in those areas though, or even if it's an important part of the story. I'd just prefer stories that focus on what really matters, like the relationships between the characters. |
