Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am a beta reader who specializes in both plot themes, psychology of human emotions, dynamic character development; realism of potential situations, and grammar help. I tend to question why an author has chosen to create a scenario, and whether that situation is realistic, even for an alternate universe. I enjoy helping other authors consider multiple situations; and if I am thoroughly informed on the book they are writing a fanfiction under, provide information or insight for that particular category. I'm not going to be a Nazi, but I would expect any author who wished to have me as a beta reader to have a basic understanding of what they are writing about, passable grammar, a concept of realism, and the realization that I'm not here to be your personal cheering section. Will I support you? Absolutely-- beta readers need to be able to offer encouragement to authors. But you conversely need to realize that I will criticize certain things about your writing, and I do expect that you'll at least take my advice into consideration when writing a final copy. In return, I will give my honest opinion of your work, some areas where you could improve, as well as basic grammar and conventions help. I'm not your personal slave, and I'm not going to treat you condescendingly for wanting help. I will do my best to ensure both of us are satisfied with the final product. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am especially talented at helping the sentence fluency of a piece, as well as suggesting synonyms for awkward words. I specialize in making static characters into dynamic ones, and adding depth to your fanfiction. My goal is to make your story more than a shallow plot with shallow characters, but to make it "come alive" to the reader. I am good at assessing situations, reminding the author that even fanfictions need a dose of realism, as well as adding some humor to a piece. I am talented at adding dialogues to a piece and putting in witty banter into character's conversations. Overall, I excel for a bit more advanced authors who want some advice on how to improve their writing, add depth to their story or characters, or just need some advice on possible scenarios. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I am not the best at catching complex grammar or usage mistakes. I don't do well with people who just want someone to proofread their writing for grammatical errors. Will I catch obvious usage mistakes? Yes. But might I miss a few small errors? Again, yes. I don't excel at bringing balance to all of the characters: I tend to focus on two or three characters, adding depth to them, rather than evenly distributing. If your writing doesn't make sense, or it is wildly unrealistic, I will not be an effective beta. I'm not saying I'm not open to unlikely scenarios or alternate universe fanfics, but even in those, there needs to be some measure of realism. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer to beta fiction, particularly fantasy stories. I enjoy editing both alternate universe, role reversal, or just "What if?" stories. I don't like editing fanfics that are wildly out of cannon, or stories that fall under a category I have never read/seen. I edit K through T stories, but I don't do M rated fanfics unless they are rated that for language or violence. I enjoying being a beta for stories that add in extra characters. Also, I am open to beta poetry or songfics. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I don't beta stories that don't at least mildly follow cannon. I also do not beta any stories under Anime/Manga, Comics, or Games. I will beta Movies, Misc, or TV Show fanfics; but I can't guarantee I've necessarily seen them. I specialize in being a beta for book fanfics, as I have read the majority of the selections under that category. Also, if you missed it above, I beta only K through T stories; with the exception if the story is rated M for violence or language. To make it plan, I don't beta lemons, or stories with unnecessary sexual content. Yes, I will beta fanfics that contain some adult content (I wrote a fanfic myself that involves a rape) but I don't beta stories that go into unnecessary detail involving sexual content. |
