Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I love reading and even more, I love burying myself in a story and really getting involved in the plot and the characters. I'm also very noticing of the basic structural errors. For example, something I see all the time that just confuses me is the mixing of lose with loose. They're two different words people. Yet for some reason, many authors pick loose instead of lose. I'll notice the spelling, as for me, that's something easily correctable with spellcheck. If someone can't even do that, it's practically a sign of incompetence. so that's something easily fixable that I'm good at. And I really love looking at details and descriptions and creative language. The more the merrier. Most important though, is the ability to choose words to set a style or mood. Make the reader feel what you want them to through mere word choice. I'll come up suggestions for improving that also. And now, I'm done rambling about myself. ^^ |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm good at catching errors, specifically grammatical and spelling errors. I'm a spelling nazi. I also have a really good grasp of complex language and vocabulary. If you have a question about a word, odds are I either know it, or have heard of it. I keep in touch with the style of writing, as I feel that's just as important as the plot and characters. I can get really involved in story and characters and tell when they're being inconsistent. I believe in constructive criticism balanced with the good qualities of the writing. No one needs to hear only the bad aspects of writing. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I tend towards run-on sentences on occasion. It's my one grammar fault. I get all fancy and wrapped up in the words that the sentences then just... run on without paying enough attention to clause rules. And sometimes I get so wrapped up in the story that I'll miss words or read it so fast, that I read it wrong. Though that last doesn't happen as often. I'm not that great at action scenes, in terms of new ideas for them or writing them myself. Nor am I very original at dialogue, but I edit pretty well. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I tend to prefer angsty somethings. And I do love bloody violence. I'm also hardcore romantic. I'll read fluff, but most of it's not as good, and also not as deep. I love deep. Really. That said, I'm also a big fan of both anime and books. Those are my preferred genres, but it goes without saying that I'm not familiar with all of them. I'd rather not beta something I know nothing about (in fanfiction anyway). So that'll be more on a case by case basis, seeing as how there are too many to list here. Though you can get a good idea from reading my regular profile what I've read. (Even though there's more than that, especially in the book department.) |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I don't do sex scenes. Sorry. I may read them occasionally (that's pretty rare, trust me), but I'm not going to edit them. I don't really get into slash of the male or female variety, but I'm willing to make exceptions. That'll be on a case by case basis. I have no particular desire to beta fanfics for tv shows or movies..... I'm just not interested generally speaking. I may be able to be convinced, but don't get hopes up to high. That being said, I love reading, so bring it on everybody. ^^ |
