Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I love helping other writers. Sometimes I find it more fun than my own writing.
When looking for a beta reader that will point out every time you use "affect" instead of "effect" or "sympathize" instead of "empathize", or one that will comment on every missed comma, I suggest you stay as far away from me as possible. I mean, I'm a relatively good English student, so I might be of some help, but grammar and spelling? Not my strong suit.
What I will comment on, if you ask me to, is the content of the story. Are the actions believable? Did you get the facts straight? Would that sentence REALLY come out of a person's mouth? Does your description sound like dialogue? Vice versa?
When I beta someone's work, I prefer to regularly talk to them about it, rather than just marking things on a document they send me and being on my way. I find that using instant messengers (I myself have both AIM--which I log into any time I am online-- and Myspace IM) is the best way to do this, although PMs can work just as well. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My biggest strength would probably be the understanding I have of characters. When I watch a show, or read a book, it's not so much the plot that I pay attention to as the people that move the plot forward. With fanfiction, I'm the same way, so, if you're writing someone out of character, I will be sure to call you on it.
Another strength of mine is dialogue. Whether you need help figuring out what someone would say in the situation they're in, or you're wondering if it flows like a real conversation, I'm your girl.
Finally, I'm good at coming up with random ideas that help move the plot along. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Description. Description is the one thing that always ruins me. I always find myself writing it in a way that sounds awkward, or just not putting enough of it. So I am no help there.
I also have the shortest attention span it's possible to have without having ADD. This causes me to take forever reading reading and commenting, and it may make me miss something important part because I skimmed over it.
My biggest weakness, for beta-ing, at least, is my age. Being only thirteen, despite what people say about me being an old spirit, there are some things I just don't understand. Not to mention that I'm immature. Really, really immature. If you don't want a beta that's not serious, you don't want me. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Well, fandom wise, I definitely would prefer either Gilmore Girls or Bones. They're the fandoms I write for, and the ones I know the most about. Ship-wise, I also like to stick with what I know (and squeal about on a regular basis), Luke/Lorelai, for GG, Booth/Brennan for Bones and Roger/Mimi for Rent.
If we're talking about the story itself, I prefer character driven pieces as opposed to those focused solely on the story being told. Especially fluffy ones, since angst and I generally don't cross well. It really depends though. Most relationship type stories are good for me.
Stories with a lot of conversation would also be great to beta. I love to talk, and I love to read and comment on other people talking. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
To state the obvious, any stories from fandoms I don't know well, or about a ship I don't support won't sit well with me. Basically, if it's not on my main profile, I won't be able to help you with it anyway.
Please, please don't send me any smut. It's not that I don't feel comfortable reading it, it's that I have no experience at all in that... area. I would not know where to begin commenting.
Non-canon slash/femslash is not my cup of tea. Especially Mark/Roger. I repeat NO MARK/ROGER fanfiction. Mark/Roger will make me cry.
I would also prefer if you didn't send me crossovers. I'm not a fan of them, no offense to you or your story.
And due to my short attention span, it's not wise to send me obscenely long chapters all at once. |
