Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Please note: if your fandom is not listed in my beta preferences, I will probably not read it for you. I have received requests for fandoms with which I am not familiar at all, and it's getting frustrating because I have no way of knowing if your characterization is correct.
Perhaps most importantly, I try not to be too heavy-handed: I won't tell you that you HAVE to change something, but I will offer several suggestions about how you can make it better. If your story is full of simple spelling errors (tpyos taht a spell cheker shud have cauhgt), I will probably still help you, but I will ask that you run a spell-check before sending your story to me. Also, if your characterization is really off, I very well may ask that you read a few more stories in the fandom (often I will recommend good ones) and/or get yourself more familiar with the original characters. However, this goes both ways. When I really like something about your story (plot idea, a particular sentence, the dialogue, etc), I will let you know, without hesitation. If you're not interested in an in-depth beta, but rather someone to bounce plot bunnies off of, I am more than happy to be there for that. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
When I am familiar with a show, I can be pretty fantastic at judging whether your characters are, well, in-character. Also, I tend to get a sense right off the bat for how a story flows, and, if not, how it can be improved. Word choice is important to me-if you repeat something several times in a paragraph, I will offer suggestions. I have a strong background in spelling and grammar, and will generally catch those mistakes in your writing. I don't promise to catch every single mistake, but I do promise to help you keep things interesting, flowing well, and faithful to your fandom. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
If I'm not familiar with your fandom, I cannot judge for certain whether your characters are written "correctly," sorry. I can offer a more general, technical read, and can help with grammar and spelling and general plot/flow, but will leave characterization largely up to you. I also have difficulties keeping up with long and involved action scenes, so you might be better off finding another beta if your story has a lot of physical action. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
My strongest suit is, I believe, flat-out general or hetero fiction. I've dabbled in writing femslash, but generally only when the mood strikes me. I am open to any and all pairings, and the same goes for the genres available here on FF.net. I do have favorites however: particularly hurt/comfort, angst, and romance. I don't have issues with any of the ratings on this site, and love a good PWP as much as a fluffy story or your average general fic. I don't mind reading strange or dark fics either. :) |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I do not love self-insert fics-those with original characters, but I know that there are always exceptions. Again, if your story is well-thought-out and your characterization is good, and you just want another set of eyes in order to keep your OC from becoming a Sue, I am here for you, 100%. If you keep Sue-ifying your OC despite my suggestions/questions, I will suggest that you find another beta. Other than that, I'm not a gigantic fan of male slash. (My father is gay and, hypocritical as it may sound, given that I read plenty of het fic and my mother was straight, I'd just rather not read it too in-depth.) |
