Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Well I am an English-enthusiast! I have been studying the english language for nearly 8 years, my first language is Japanese. Some might see that as a disadvantage, however I find it to be quite the opposite. Because english is not my first language, I try even harder to make everything (grammar, punctuation, vocabulary etc.) as impressive as it can be, and to apply my knowledge with the expected levels of care. I moved to England around four months ago as I had been offered a European Languages Scolarship at Camberidge University which I accepted and I am told (and agree myself) that my English is just as good as anyone from an English speaking nation if not better because I try harder to improve my language skills. So that's a little about myself and my qualifications as a BETA reader.
I currently leave alot of detailed reviews on stories and decided that my ability to BETA read work may help others (whilst practising my own language skills) so any requests for help would be appreciated greatly. I'm not a negative type of reader, there is no use in just flaming somebody because you do not like their writing. I am a firm believer in always starting with something posotive and then something to improve on - so you don't need to worry about me biting your head off. I'll accept anyone, though preferably somebody with work in a genre I understand so that I can help you with other aspects of your story (perhaps things like characterisation or monologues). So it really doesn't matter to me whether your talented or not, just that you take my advice on board. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am good at finding and correcting grammar and spelling mistakes (quite standard of a BETA reader to be honest) but my real talent is rearranging and developing sentance structure so that phrases and key sentances make more sense or become more descriptive to the reader. I'm also quite good at characterisation but only in genres I know of. I'm also acceptable at cutting down paragraphs and seperating them to a better structure. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I am not so good at giving any sort of plot advice and not very good at punctuation - but I can get my grammar books and all the information needed is in them, so if I'm not sure I can just search it up. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Bleach, Naruto, Beyblade, Final Fantasy 7, X, X-2, can't think of any more, so if your not sure just ask me. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Yaoi or any sort of hentai, or smutty fiction. Not that I'm against gay or anything sexual - it's just really not what I like to read. I don't mind small lemons or intimate scenes just not word porn please. |
