Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I take a hard grammatical look at the document after an initial read-through to get a feel for the chapter. After that, I tend to make annotations affecting the flow of the sentence without doing much to affect the intended meaning and style of the author.
Anyone who wishes to acquire my services as a beta-reader can expect minimal interference in the actual content of their stories, while getting the best grammatical clean up that I can muster. If my opinions are asked for with regards to the direction or plot of the story, I shall certainly respond with my own observations and notes.
I only accept fictions based in the universe of Harry Potter, and no crossovers. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am strict with grammar and make spelling a top priority.
I will not simply re-write the story and call it a job done in any fashion. That is not beta-reading.
I will correct errors and make subtle changes to improve flow.
I will offer my full opinion on the direction of the story if asked, and will make suggestions if and only if asked. It is not my place to write your story, so I will not do it through my role of beta-reader, out of respect to the author. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I take a relatively minimalist stance on beta-reading.
I may miss a few of the more difficult grammar errors, as sometimes they manage to trip me up.
Spelling done in American English bothers me to no end, despite being a Yank myself. I can and often do ignore it in the writing of others, though I may inadvertently use the Queen's English when correcting in any author's story.
Incorrect spelling is a bother to me in general, and it frustrates me to deal with it. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I would prefer to take stories based on the lives of Tom Riddle, Teddy Lupin, the Marauders, Severus Snape, or Hermione Granger; canon-compliant where possible. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I will not take:
stories involving Mary Sues. The moment I detect a Mary Sue, I will cease beta-reading your story.
stories not written in the Harry Potter universe.
Crossover stories. |
