Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
We all love reading fan fiction, but there's nothing worse than reading a great story that's littered with spelling and grammatical errors. I'll go over your story with a fine-toothed comb and correct any grammar, spelling, or punctuation error that I see to the very best of my ability. I'm not bragging, but it might be worth noting that I am in an honors English class.
I'm always proofreading reports that my friends email to me. I read the whole thing first, and correct anything that sticks out immediately to me. Then I'll read it again, sentence-by-sentence, looking more keenly for any errors I might have missed. My last step is to leave it alone for five or ten minutes and do something else, to break my concentration before proofreading it one more time.
If you are interested and wish to contact me, you can send me a private message, or you may email me at SmartCookie1035@comcast.net. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I do extremely well with spotting grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors. I'm also very good with in-character dialog, as in writing in a way in which someone would actually talk. And yes, this can interfere with correct grammar in certain cases, as in if some thing's not correct because you wrote it to be that way (Ex: "It don't make no difference." Teachers just can't seem to understand this.) I also do very well with putting emphasis on certain words to make the character's speech sound lifelike and authentic.
As you can see, not even horrible grammar and spelling can COMPLETELY ruin something. But if the characters don't sound natural and fluidic, it's just awful, no matter how great your idea is.
Also, I'm pretty good at letting people know when something is or isn't funny. That sounds harsh, I know, but I digress. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I don't come with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Everybody can make mistakes (or miss a few, for that matter.) I can't think of any specific Achilles heel I have, but I do tend to make run-on sentences sometimes. Sometimes punctuation can mess me up a little- like when to use a - or a ; or a : when making a list or something of that nature. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I guess I'll just tell you that I love Batman, Tomb Raider, and Star Trek. If one of these happens to be your bag, I'll go over your story with delight. But really, I'll be happy to look over anything. After all, I'm here for your assistance.
I'll take mostly any genre of story, but I especially love comedy. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Like I said, I'll generally take anything. However, I do detest Harry Potter and anime. I realize that these are very popular, but I just really don't care for them.
Also, I refuse to read ANY Slash whatsoever. No exceptions. |
