Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've taken a long break for writing fanfiction. A two-year plus break. The stories in my profile are old, poorly-written, and make me cringe - but I've left them up to motivate myself to improve. During my extended haitus, I'd spent a lot of time writing academic non-fiction (in other words, schoolwork) and articles for my university's newspaper, where I learned better writing and have been able to practice editing. Interested writers should know that I generally don't mince words and probably will be brutal when editing a story. And since I'm in the habit (see explanation in box below), I will ask to look over the new revision. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Strengths? I'm a journalism major, so editing is basically second nature: my strengths lie in facts, style (grammar and format) and whether the point was conveyed concisely in a manner that flowed well. Incorrect punctuation can be corrected, but I see no point in useless words that only serve to discourage the reader from continuing. I'm good at pointing out what areas need clarification or are strong in the story. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm a college student, and one of our biggest weaknesses is procrastination. But give me a deadline, and a lot of the problem has been eliminated. Another weakness is character development, or sometimes a lack of vision, especially when reading someone else's work. If you have no vision for your story, I can point you in a direction, but in the end, I can only help so much. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I would prefer to beta works within a fandom with which I am familiar. I like stories where love - or the endurance of it - is a prominent aspect of the story. Drama, humour, and family are also fine, whereas action in writing tends to bore me a bit. My main preference is that the pairing (if one is featured) is one that I support or am neutral towards. Oneshots are also preferred, something with which I can sit down and work on for an afternoon and then be done. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I'm not into any sort of slash - yuri or yaoi. And while I can read het-pairing lemons, I cannot write them, so editing will be minimal and limited to mechanics. |
