Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I will proofread short works in my favorite fandoms. Also stories that might fit in my c2 community, Exquisite Tortures, a collection of stories which handle the topic of torture well.
Consider me like a magazine editor; don't send me things that still need to be put through Spellcheck, or are in the wrong format, etc. I will also beta longer works, but only for authors with whom I have previously worked successfully.
I'll be your second pair of eyes to spot little mistakes, or even big mistakes, but I won't read things that are incoherent, or are written in "txtspk", or have such bad grammar that they make me want to go back in time and wring the neck of the first politician to invent the idea of the public school. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
1. Style, including spelling, grammar, and structure. This includes some dialects common to my favorite fandoms.
2. Knowledge of cannon in my favorite fandoms, particularly Lord of the Rings.
3. An ear for the speech of specific characters in my favorite fandoms, and the type of dialogue certain character groups have together.
4. Knowledge of what is and is not anachronistic for specific times and places in history, and parallel knowledge of technology and magic in my favorite fandoms. I have particular knowledge of Elizabethan England, the barbarian North during the Viking Age and heathen prehistory, and the Soviet Union.
5. Knowledge of martial arts. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Alien or foreign words from TV shows that I have only heard and never seen written; I may not be able to catch spelling mistakes in those. Nor can I proofread dialogue in Elvish, Klingon, or Minbari. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Short works in my favorite fandoms: Lord of the Rings, Babylon 5, The Sentinel, Star Wars (the original trilogy and the bookverse based on it), Star Trek (Classic, NextGen, and DS9), Alien Nation, Buffy (and its spinoff Angel), Charmed, Battlestar Galactica (the ORIGINAL only), Quantum Leap, Sliders, Stargate (SG1), and some classic sf books. I will also read works from any fandom that might belong in my c2 community Exquisite Tortures, which showcases stories which handle that topic well. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Out of character silliness. 10th Walker stories and other bad Mary Sues. (Good Mary Sues are OK; by that I mean self-insertions that do not disrupt cannon or the cannon characters' relationships with each other, and do not exist solely for the purpose of seducing the cannon characters.) |
