Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Hey, I'm Rachel. I like to read most anything and everything by accomplished writers and novices alike. I am a student in high school with a passion for writing. I have excelled at it ever since I was young and I take pride in writing well developed stories with correct grammar and syntax. I also thoroughly enjoy helping others achieve the same thing.
When beta reading, I like to read the story once just to get a feel for the plot. I go through again at least once to fix grammar mistakes. Once that is finished, if you'd like, I can help you develop the plot in places where it might be weak. I keep an original copy and make changed in color so we can both see what changes have been made and if they are beneficial or not. I read through again to make sure everything flows correctly. If something I would like to change might detract from the story, I'd like to talk to the author to make sure their vision is not compromised.
I don't expect perfect writing, but I don't want to be changing any "u"s to "you"s, if you get my point. I expect you to be patient with me. Of course I have other things to do besides beta read all day (although I might prefer to do that all day), so if I'm not back by you by the end of the day, you can shoot me a e-mail to ask how far I've gotten and I can give you an update. But please, please don't get snippy. :) |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am very good at correcting grammar. My friends sometimes call me the grammar police. I also take pride in my vocabulary. Word choice adds variety to stories. I love variety in syntax. I'm also quite good at understanding character and I strongly encourage authors to take into account how the character in the book would think, act, feel, ect. in their fan fiction. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Well, I'm human; no one is perfect. In my own stories I have one or two type-os I'd love to have time to fix and re-upload. No matter how many times you read something it can still slip through. I'm also pretty nitpicky... and probably spend too much time looking at one chapter, but I'm trying to be thorough. At the same time if you want something ASAP I work well with a deadline. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I do not care if the pairings are cannon or not. I will do anything, as long as it's not wildly out of character. For instance, in Twilight, I would read something about Bella and Jacob. I could see Bella choosing to be with Jacob. Now, if Jacob starts beating her, then I might balk. I don't like things to be wildly out of character, but I'm not strictly cannon, if that makes sense.
I also request that I know something about the subject of the fan fiction I'm beta-ing. If you're still reading, I assume you're interested in my services, so the good news is that I'm well versed in most main stream and many sort of obscure works in books, tv, and movies. Shoot me a message and I will let you know, there's more than I could list here.
I will also beta stories at K through M ratings. I am okay with just about everything. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I don't like anime, and I don't read it. The best way for me to do justice to your fan fiction and the authors characters is to make sure I'm familiar with the work. So if I haven't read it/seen it, I'll be pretty reluctant to look at your fiction until I've read it, at least. |
