Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Well, my personal style for reading stories goes as follows: I read at leisure. Do not pressure me to read your story at every avaliable chance you have. I have a life outside of this site, so bare with me. As far as expectations go, I expect good grammar/spelling, correct use of paragraphs, and well-rounded, interesting characters (this only applies to OCs.) Before I read a story, I always skim through the first chapter to see if I will actually like it. Also, with your character, please make them realistic. To be perfectly honest, I don't like reading about over-emotional characters who take care of their twelve younger siblings because their parents died in a car accident. I also do not care for characters who have everything they could ever want, know karate, play tennis, and have eight trophies in baton twirling. And one last thing for all you to remember: Please use time breaks and paragraphs correctly. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
As far as strengths go, I would say that I am good at picking out spelling and grammar errors along with major flaws in characters. Oh, and by flaws I do not mean the ones that real people have. By flaws I mean "Mary-Sue" characters or characters that have way too many problems. I also believe I can spot some major and minor plot flaws. This is not to say that the plot is wonky, but that it is too unrealistic and should be toned down a bit. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
As for what I am not too good at, well, I can't judge scenes with sexual content very well. My first and only sex scene thus far was very short and, I think, not very well written. I also am not too good at critiquing stories that mesh with the plot of a book/movie/TV show/etc. For example, I will use the movie The Covenant: If your plot takes place during the movie while everything is going on, I would probably not be the person to ask to betaread that story. I would either be too critical in my reviews or not critical enough. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
My preferred generes are romance, drama, angst, and supernatural. If you look at my profile, you will see the different paring that I am fond of, and pairings that I am not fond of. I will read stories that are either canon pairings or not, and stories that have [multiple] OC(s) paired with [a] character(s) from the story. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I prefer to stay away from stories that have an OC paired with an OC. It defeats the purpose of a fanfiction, to me. Also, I do not enjoy reading stories grouped under humor. I like humorous stories, but not stories that are centered around jokes. (The only exception I have for this is "An AIM Conversation" by DracosDaughter1.) |
