Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I have been in many creative writing classes where I critique other author's work. I edit my own chaptered story. That said, I am only mildly experienced at beta-ing fanfiction over the internet. I can make suggestions mechanics or content wise-- and enjoy doing both. I know there are several methods of editing. I can do whichever you're comfortable with. I also can usually get it back to you very quickly. It should usually be within a day or maybe two. I wil read any rating and most any genre. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am a grammar nut. As an English major, I can help with the inner workings of the English language. I can edit your story to be as grammatically correct as you need it to be. (Some grammar rules are used so infrequently that it almost sounds wrong when they are used correctly.) I also find myself, very often, reading a story and "backseat driving." I like to come up with plot ideas and could usually help you out of writer's block. I have a fairly extensive vocabulary, and can suggest replacements for uverused words. If your story requires any sort of foreign language, I am nearly fluent in Latin, can get by in French, and know a few terms in Spanish, Italian, Greek, and German. Finally, I am a meticulous fact-checker. If any story that I read has any historical errors or other inconsistencies, I almost always notice them. I can point these out to you an offer suggestions. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I've never been great at spelling. I seem to always forget the "i before e except after c" rule. I rely on my spell-checker and, to a point, a dictionary and thesaurus. If it's a good story for which I'm beta-ing, I can easily get caught up in the story and only notice jarring errors. My penchance for making suggestions plot-wise could also be coonsidered a weakness. If you have a well thought out story, my suggestions won't make a difference. I type very fast and have a tendancy to make typos. This doesn't affect my beta abilities as much as my writing ability, but is is something to note. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
My favorite genres to read are drama and romance. I do read other genres such as Action/Adventure, comedy, and tragedy, but they are not my first choices. I don't mind angst as long as it's realistic and intermixed with other genres. I read fanfiction for my entertainment so I don't want to come out of it in a pit of depression. As far as ships go, I will read any canon ship. In other words, I don't want to read any pairing that is not between people who are designated to be together in the original work. It would probably be easier to work with someone around my age. (I myself am 19 so I'd prefer to work with someone in high school or already out.) |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
As I said, I don't want to drown in angst. I also would prefer not to read a story that is overloaded with original characters. It can be very confusing keeping track of all of them--besides, I read fanfiction for the characters I already know. |
