Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I have written fiction for over twenty years. The spec writing I do here is a way to release creative energies and exercise my skills in between tackling my own original works, several novels among them. I am fascinated with the elements of good stories, especially embrace mythical concepts and themes, believe characters drive plot, and always look for the passion in every scene. If this is how you feel about writing, I want to read/critique your work!
I’m passionate about creative writing and have studied and practiced it for years. So what I’m offering is detailed input from someone who knows quite a bit about the scribbling arts, has had her own work dissected (sometimes painfully) by authors much better than her, and who is willing to share what she has learned in hopes of learning more herself.
If you would like me to review your work, please be sure to have the basics of spelling and grammar down cold. I always look for strengths as well as weaknesses in any writing, and I will be very honest about both. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Dialog, character, description, setting, and getting out of the way of my characters are all hands-down my favorite aspects of writing and, therefore, probably the ones I have the most skill at. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Action scenes are always a challenge for me, and figuring out a plot ahead of time gives me the worst headache. But I’m getting better at both. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Really, I'm willing to look at anything in the genres I’ve indicated. I’d prefer to work with material the background of which I’m familiar with, but that’s not strictly necessary. A good story is a good story and should be able to stand on its own two feet. So run it by me, and if it really has me baffled, I’ll let you know and politely bow out. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I’m not interested in tales of gratuitous violence and gore or unnecessarily graphic sex. |
