Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I enjoy reading for enjoyment, and to improve my own writing. So, I bring that interest and intention for improvement (vs tearing down) to beta-reading.
My schooling and professional life focus on communication, and therefore I'm a very strong believer that HOW we communicate is as important as WHAT we do, sometimes more than the WHAT. So, I bring that philosophy and training, as both author and critic.
I invite you to take a peek at my stories posted here, for a sense of my writing style. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Good with details (grammar, spelling, etc), and general themes, plot flow, etc. I also enjoy more complex plots--twists, subplots, etc, intrigue me. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I struggle most with characterisation in my own writing, so bring that weakness, but therefore conscious focus to beta-reading. And, while I've indicated universes with which I'm very familiar, I can't guarantee I'll be a perfect fact-checker for canon. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Most any type (except those below) are fine. Teacher in me would certainly prefer receiving only spell/grammar-checked drafts, so we can focus on less 'easy' improvements. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Am not a fan of horror or gore at all, and don't care for sex/slash stories whose whole purpose is the sex. Ditto with not-intentionally-humorous Mary Sues... |
