Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm an editor for a newspaper, and I've actually entered (and won) copy-editing competitions. I'm very picky about spelling and grammer, and out of habit I tend to edit things to Associated Press style guidelines (it's just easier that way)
I would expect that anyone who wants me to beta their story has a fairly firm grasp of the English language and spelling and grammer. I'm supposed to catch mistakes you might make - not rewrite your entire story for you.
But don't take that to mean that if you are a newbie writer that I will be overly critical and not want to help. I'd love to be able to help, just I don't want any part of your story to consist of a sentence like this: "Hi. how r u 2day?"
I'd like to be able to read your stories in a word document, that way I can make notes and highlight changes that I feel need to be made. If that's not possible, I am flexible with the way I edit, just not always with the time I am able to be online. It'd be easier for me to save it and do it when I'm not on the internet. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I've taken so much English in my lifetime, I think I know it. As I mentioned above I am a copy editor, so I have an excellent grasp on grammer, spelling, punctuation, word usage and style. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I have a habit of editing things to Associated Press style, which for those of you who don't know is for newspaper copy. For example, in AP style, you write website, like Web site. Just stuff that doesn't make a difference.
Also I don't always catch passive voice, unless the sentence is really awkward. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I have no preferences really. I'm not too big of fan of non-canon stories, but if I'm proofing them, I don't have to enjoy it... it just helps. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Not particularly. |
