Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
My name is Jess. I am a full time college student. I also have a full time job writing and editing web content for an outdoor retailer. I have a strong background in writing, winning several awards from the age of five. I also have been the editor of nearly every single school newspaper I have joined or contributed to. In high school, I took Advanced Placement English Composition and received A's. I also speak, read and write Russian and some Japanese.
My beta-style consists of several reads. The first time I read a story, I will read for "enjoyment." This allows me to take in the story and author's chosen writing style (for the piece) while quickly finding the more distracting errors in spelling, grammar or typing. A second read involves looking for specific spelling and grammar errors while analyzing sentence structure and flow. If I think something can be worded differently to convey what I believe is the probably intention of the writer, I will usually find it here. A third read (or even fourth or fifth) results in the hopefully finished product. Odds are, I will ask you want kind of feeling you are trying to convey to your readers so that I have a better idea during the later analysis. That might sound unusual, but as I have and will continue to say though this profile, if I can help you write something absolutely awesome, great. =)
I am more than happy to bounce ideas around and play thesaurus for someone. I'm not perfect (no one is), but I strive to make any writing that comes across my plate as close to [perfect] as I can get it. Just like I want my writing to look good, I want other people's writing to look fantastic, as well. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am quick to catch 95% of grammatical, spelling and typing errors in a piece when I read it. When I analyze sentence structure and story content, I do so while trying to maintain the authenticity. This is someone else's work and someone else's writing style, not mine. I offer suggestions, but I am not someone who is going to force them on you, by any means. I encourage other writers to take risks because there is no point to writing if you hold back. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I do struggle a bit, sometimes, with the spelling of foreign words because transcribing them into Roman English can be difficult. I also tend to suggest larger words that not everyone might understand, which stems from studying political science for a couple of years. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I think it would be in the best interest of both parties that I beta stories for the shows/books/etc. I am most familiar with; however, I am not averse to editing others. I am open to new shows and series. Also, I am not squeamish, by any means. I can handle graphic stories just as well as rated K fluff. (Translation: girl-girl pairings, guy-guy pairings, whatever... throw it at me. If I have concerns, I will let you know so you can do whatever it is you need to do to get your story up and sparkling.) |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I mean it. I will read just about anything. *g* |
