Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've benefitted from some wonderful betas over the years, so it seems only fair that I give back. I will warn you, I expect a certain amount of quality from the rough drafts I see. Nobody's perfect, so errors are inevitable, but please don't send me something that you wrote in fifteen minutes at two in the morning while high on sugar. If you've put effort into your story, I'll be able to tell, regardless of your skill level.
If you're ready to take the plunge, email me with your story if it's done, a chapter and plot outline if it's longer, or just a few ideas if you haven't gotten that far yet. Let me know how much you'd like me to help. I can check just spelling and grammar, but I think most people would benefit from another perspective on their characters, plot, ect. I know I do! I'm a student, so I have a fairly busy schedule, but I should be able to return your chap, with suggestions in red type, within a few days. If not, I'll email you and let you know what my situation is.
One more thing: don't slap an AU label on your story "just to be safe." AU is a wonderful thing so long as it's deliberate and believable. If you decide to write an AU you should go into the story with a clear idea of what you're going to change and how it will affect canon events. Canon breaches can be dealt with. In the rare instance that your whole story is built around a canon breach, you have the option of scrapping the story or reimagining it to fit with canon events. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm good with spelling/grammar, continuity, story flow, ect. I can help with characterization, and I may be able to help you plot if you're stuck. I can usually spot canon errors, and they *really* annoy me, so I'll point them out, even if you've only asked for a grammar check. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
While I'm pretty good with grammar, I haven't had much formal training. So if you're looking for someone to say "okay, use present progressive instead of past participle," you should contact someone else. I can usually tell when something sounds wrong, but I'm not always sure how to fix it.
Then, there's canon. While I have a fairly thorough knowledge of Pretender and BSG-verse, Tolkien's canon is *massive* and my knowledge is far from complete. Though I'm trying to improve, I have only the barest knowledge of Sindarin (Grey Elvish) and know next to nothing about the other languages of Middle Earth. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I will only beta in fandoms I have written for. At the moment, that encompasses The Pretender, Lord of the Rings, and Battlestar Galactica (2003). I prefer to beta the types of stories I write--mainly angst, action/adventure, and character studies. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I won't do slash or graphic sex. In fact, I'm not good with relationships in general, so Romance is not really my forte. |
