Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've done some beta reading, and I think I'm pretty well suited for it. I can be a very critical reader, or a very gentle reader, whichever is necessary, as long as I think the story holds potential. But I promise that even when I'm reading more leniently, I'm not going to let non-stylistic grammar mistakes or anything that really irritates me just slip by. I'll just be nicer about pointing those things out. ;)
If you want me to beta for you, and unless you have a problem with English and tell me so, I will expect to see at least semi-decent work. By this I mean no textspeak, no block paragraphs o' doom, and the like. I will be understanding about plot/characterization difficulties, but honestly, typing full sentences is not so hard.
Generally I ask to see the first chapter before I make a firm decision, because I don't want to promise my assistance and then potentially run across something that makes me unwilling to follow through. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am an English major, and as such I can be pretty critical about grammar/spelling. Not *exceptionally*, but I have a pretty decent vocabulary, so I can really help if you want to make your story sound pretty. Another thing I have been told I am good at is writing emotions, and really making it feel *real* what the character is experiencing. I keep an watchful eye out for characterization as well, as that can be a real sticking-point for my enjoyment of a story.
I do like to beta for plot as well as just shining things up to look nice. I will offer opinions and ask questions if I feel the need, because I think that is a very valuable part of betaing. So if all you want is a spellcheck, then use your computer and don't ask me for help. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I am, sadly, not the best at offering long, detailed corrections, etc. for just any story. If I truly like it, I will probably have lots to say, but if it fails to really interest me, or if I think it's just fine on its own, don't expect any monologue-sized edits, or so on. The best I'll be able to offer in many cases will most likely be general advice (and grammar/spelling edits), especially if it's not one of the fanfiction genres that I'm very familiar with.
I will generally take a few days before getting a story back to you, with few exceptions, so be warned: don't expect it right away. But when it does come back, I will have read it several times and really thought about it, so I think the delay allows me to give you better feedback. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I tend to prefer stories with romance to just general ones, and of course I like stories with engaging plots. I will, however, be perfectly willing to beta pretty much any story that has managed to catch my interest - and I can have a pretty wide range of interest. I do prefer shorter stories and oneshots over longer ones, simply because it's easier to commit to betaing, though not when the short length is to the story's own detriment. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I can not write, and am not entirely willing to read stories based entirely on smut. If a story has a genuine plot, for which dirty talk/action is necessary, then I might be willing to beta it, but I will not be able to offer any in-depth observations on the M-rated scenes. Generally my limit is snogging, though vague sexual activity is a maybe. Again, mostly it depends on whether the hanky-panky is present for the sake of plot, or the 'plot' is there for the sake of the hanky-panky.
Any crazy kinks, rape, incest, etc. are not necessarily a deterrent to me if they was already present in the source material. A Mawaru Penguindrum fanfic in which Kanba may be in love with his sister Himari, that's one thing. But if you want to write a Harry/Snape romance in which Snape is secretly Harry's father and Harry has a fetish for wearing Dobby's tea cozy as a result of Draco's abusive ways, for (a vastly hyperbolic and terribly OOC) example - I will unequivocally refuse.
Also, I CAN NOT STAND MPREG. |
