Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am very thorough in my critiquing, and will not spare corrections for the sake of improvement. If you wish me to take a look at your work, be prepared to possibly take harsh but constructive criticism. Contact me if you wish, and let me know exactly what kind of reading you wish me to do. If you wish me to critique your work, I expect you to be willing to accept what I have to say. Please proof your own work before you submit it to me, making sure it is completed to the best of your ability; this gives me a feel for your abilities and the levels to which I can push your work. I am here to help you; you may hate me for what I say about your writing, but I will not be harsh or untruthful--only honest and exacting, with your best interests in mind. I will not expect perfection from you (unless you desire me to be that demanding), but I will do what I can to push your work in that direction.
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I have excellent grammar, personally, so I will attempt to do all I can to fine-tune yours. I have an eye for what works in writing and what does not. I will pick out any incomplete, circular, fragmented, weak, run-on (etc.) sentences. I am very exacting on the subject of keeping tense consistent (past, present, etc.) I will point out if your verb-tenses do not agree, and ask that you change them if they do not. Being tense-consistent is one of the best things you can do to make your writing easy and enjoyable to your reader. Characterization is another strong point of mine, so I will most certainly call it to your attention if your characters are lacking. (If the length of the composition does not allow for proper characterization, that is, of course a different matter. Short stories are generally the exception on the subject of characterization.) Demanding and exacting in my own work, I do everything I possibly can to improve not only my work, but the work of those I have the privilege to read for. I am completely honest in the way I critique, so be prepared for whatever I have to say. I also offer praise and encouragement, so I will make sure I offer you a balance of praise and criticism. I have had considerable experience in the field of editing/critiquing, so please hear what I have to say. Perhaps together, we can improve your style and make your writing more enjoyable than it most certainly already is.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I am not the best speller. I have always had this weakness, so I am very demanding on the subject of spell-checking. Without having your words correctly spelled, your writing bears a large imperfection that could be easily remedied.
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer shorter stories (under 20,000 words), but I will beta longer compositions if you are patient, and allow me time to properly go through your work.
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Stories that ramble on without any sense of plot are not "my cup of tea." I don't mind short oneshots that have no plot, but long stories (over 50,000 words) must have a plot in order for me to be willing to critique them. Plot is all-important in good writing--USE IT!!! I might make exceptions, depending on the work. Contact me and we can discuss this.
