Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I have been a member of FanFiction.net since April of 2008, but I have been writing much longer than that.
When betareading a story, I first read the story carefully to check if it makes sense. Then I read it backwards to check for spelling errors. Then I read it forwards again very slowly to check punctuation and grammar.
As I betareader, I request (and expect) the author of the story to have a basic knowledge of the fandom and the English language, as well as basic spelling, grammar, and punctuation. No, I am not perfect. I am not your spell-check machine either. Please, please, PLEASE read over your story before sending it to me and check for basic errors. It saves me time that I could be using to help you make the story better. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I consider myself to be an excellent speller. I usually catch errors very quickly, and I am pretty thorough.
I pride myself upon my honesty and tact. If I think there is something in your story that doesn't make sense or that I think you should change, I will give you my honest opinion while not being overly critical.
I usually can beta a story fairly quickly, which I think is more convenient for the author, but only if it is done well. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My weaknesses as a betareader are similar to my weaknesses as an author. I lose interest very quickly, so if your story is boring to me, don't be surprised if it takes me longer than if it were something I'm interested in.
I can tend to read into things too much and think too hard about tiny details.
Also, I can be overly critical sometimes. Occasionally, things will really annoy or bother me, and I will definitely let you know, but I can get a little mean sometimes. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer to beta darker, more angsty stories. I can do humor sometimes, but it all depends on my mood.
Romantic stories are more my cup of tea, but I love some of the more lighthearted friendship stories. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I really am not a fan of crossover stories. Please, look to someone else for those.
Also, sometimes AU stories get on my nerves because a lot of them have been done a dozen times before. If you really believe that your AU story is original, let me take a look at it and see what I think. |
