I started my beta career almost by accident. I've often served as a sounding board for friends to bounce their ideas off of. I'm more than willing to help you develop your plot [or RP with you to try to get into your characters' heads], but please don't ask me to plot the entire story out for you. I have enough stories of my own to work on, I don't want to take on yours as well.

Generally, if you ask me to beta for you, I'll read it through more than once. The first time I'll focus on the mechanics- grammar, spelling, etc. The second time I'll be looking for continuity, character, plot, etc. Then I'll read it over once more, to be sure I've gotten everything. Therefore, it might take me a couple of days to get back to you. Feel free to give me a deadline.

I'm really good with grammar and internal monologues. I will admit to being a bit of a grammar nazi, and I'm in love with my thesaurus. Most of my stories focus on internal development, with a bit of psychology thrown in, so that's probably what I'm strongest at. If you need to decipher motivation for your characters or need help explaining them, I'm your girl. I'd also like to think I'm good at pointing out where you might want to expand your writing- delving further into the hows and whys of the plot, etc.

In general, I don't like to focus on flaws- I'd rather congratulate you on the good parts of a chapter. However, if you ask it of me, I'm willing to be a shark when it comes to flaws in logic or weak action or the like. I admit to not being very good at writing action sequences; I think I'm a bit too wordy to get the flow of an action scene right. Also, as mentioned above, it may take me a few days to return your chapter to you, because of RL or my own stories demanding my attention. But I'll do my best to get things back to you in a timely fashion.

I'm more comfortable beta'ing a story in a genre I'm familiar with. I have no problem with GLBT material [and I'll try to keep my thoughts to myself on your pairing, unless I think it's simply so ludicrous that it needs either a brilliant author or a really good explanation], though in general I'm wary of lemony content because I don't think many people [and this includes me] write it well [there are, of course, exceptions].

Also, if you're going to do something like an eating disorder, abuse, self-mutilation, or rape [just to name a few], you're going to have to convince me that it's an integral part of your story and not just a plot hook to get your two characters together. I don't approve of writers messing with such sensitive and serious topics unless they're really going to do it justice.

NO ANIME PLEASE. Ditto that for most TV shows [since I don't watch much TV]. And Twilight [I've done my contribution to that, don't want to be involved in any more]. I'm not fond of straight love stories- I want there to be some kind of plot besides 'will He and She get together?' Unless said straight love story is only a drabble or one-shot, then I'm fine with that.
