Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
My name is Tore, and my biggest reference for becoming a beta reader is the fact that I've been reading anything and everything since I was about four years old. I, obviously, started with childish series', but over the years I have read everything from sappy romances to shoot-'em-up adventures to blood-curdling horrors. I have a little bit of experience in everything and feel that I can recognize the "rights and wrongs", if you will, for most genres.
Additionally, I am a writer myself and as such I feel I am able to better understand the concepts another writer may be attempting to bring across.
If requested to read your story I will read with an open mind and an objective mind. Although a story may not be particularly my style, I feel I am still able to see the good in a piece of writing just as easily as it is to see the bad. I will not pick your work to pieces, but I will state plainly and simply what I think can use work.
As the person requesting a beta-read, I expect you to be ready to recieve critisism. I will not be unnecessarily harsh, but I do not expect to become part of an online boxing match if you do not agree with my thoughts and suggestions. You have every right to ignore comments you do not agree with, but I will not argue with you over them. My opinions are what you are looking for, after all. |

Picking out incorrect spelling, poor grammer, and ill sentence structure is the first thing I can do for your work. In addition to that I can help rework poor wording, offer suggestions for more descriptive lines, and point out plot holes and other discrepancies in your stories. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I can not write your story for you. I do not know what is in your head as far as setting, character backgrounds, and plot devices are concerned. I have a hard enough time working my own characters into the being I want them to be without trying to figure out what yours should be as well! |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
In particular I enjoy stories based on Naruto, Harry Potter, and the Final Fantasy series, although I will read others as well. It doesn't hurt to ask!
I enjoy slash, as long as it's tasteful and not just written as a reason to get two characters into each other's pants. In particular I enjoy the Sirius Black/Remus Lupin pairing as well as the Kakashi/Iruka pairing. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
While I enjoy slash, I hate hate hate slash based on super-underage characters (any romance at that age, really). Please, no slash concerning Naruto/Sasuke/any other Naruto character from the original series (they're 13 for pete's sake!) or any Harry Potter slash from the school characters in their first three or four years...that's just too young for me to deal with.
Additionally, I love Final Fantasy, but as I have not played 1,2,3,4, or 5 all the way through, I can't really judge stories written on them. I'll still read them if requested, but I will not be able to comment reasonably well. |
