Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am a new beta-reader and I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the best writer in the world. But a lifetime spent reading every novel I could get my hands on and studying professional author's styles has helped immensely when it comes to checking my own work over.
When I proof-read a story I strive to hold it up to the same standards I expect from myself. Grammar and spelling are important, but the first thing I look at is the actual storytelling. There is always time to fix the text but if the story doesn't make any sense, what's the point? If I make any comments that seem out of line, just say something and I will be more than happy to explain exactly what was meant by it.
I don't have alot of expectations. Just be serious about your writing and we'll get along just fine. I'm not going to harry you with deadlines and depending on what's going on in my life I only ask that you give me the same amount of respect. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I have a very strong vocabulary (sometimes to a fault) so if you are having any trouble with describing a scene, I'm practically a walking thesaurus. I take alot of my writing style from my favorite author, Orson Scott Card. (in fact, I've read just about every book he's written on the subject of writing, perspective and such) I always pay close attention to vivid images and descriptions to form a clear picture in the reader's head. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I have been known to rush at times, which can lead to sections being overlooked if they don't appear at first glace to be important to the narrative. Believe you me, I've gone back and looked over some earlier writings of mine that will never be posted here and there is plenty of room for improvement. (An easy way to compesate for this is to give me a list of what you'd like me to focus on so I don't miss anything.) |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I have a very dry sense of humor, bordering on cynical, so the lighthearted comedy is best left to the pros. I enjoy a good dramatic tale, and when it comes to dramatic timing, tension and dark humor I'm your guy. I also don't mind parodies as long as the concept is solid. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Take this for what you will, but I will not touch slashy stories. I've only ever found one such case in which the story's writer actually did a good job of explaining exactly why the things that were happening were. |
