When I beta-read, I like to email each chapter back to the author with comments/corrections in red. I will beta-read literally anything, although I do keep fairly high standards. Be warned: I am entirely willing to send chapters back with more red than black. That being said, I try to make sure my critique is as constructive as possible. I will correct any spelling/grammar errors, but I don't shy away from the higher order concerns. If I don't feel like your plot is holding together, I'll tell you so. If all you want is someone to gush over your work, I'm not the right beta-reader for you. Another thing: I tend towards traditional, clear-cut prose. If you're writing in a more free-form, stream of consciousness way, I'll probably be useless at best, obstructive at worst. Doubly so for songfics.

I am an excellent proof-reader, and I am fairly good at reworking awkward sentences. Stylistic issues are my forte.

While I do try to go over higher order writing concerns, I'm not the best person for ironing out timelines or plot problems. I'll try, but I can't promise miracles. Sex scenes are basically out of my league; while I'm perfectly willing to read them and to give you my opinions, I probably won't be of much help writing them.

I love adventure, mystery, drama, and basically anything which will get me thinking or keep in suspense. Romance is also good, although I'm rather leery about beta-reading stories where plot takes the back seat to porn (See Not My Cup of Tea). Most of all, I'd prefer stories by writers who really want to improve, and will actually consider my critique.

I'm not very into PWP stories. I'll beta them, but if there are poorly written sex scenes I'm basically going to throw up my hands and leave them be, or maybe send you over to TvTropes. I generally dislike songfics. There are exceptions, of course, but chances are that if you ask me to beta a songfic, the first thing I'll ask you to do will be to get rid of the song-parts. I would prefer not to beta stories that are actually RPG surrogates. Also, please do not ask me to beta-read for you if all you want are compliments about how good your story is. Besides the fact that this entirely defeats the point of beta-reading, it's incredibly frustrating to spend hours trying to help someone who promptly ignores you.
