Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I tend to look at how well someone is developing a character. I will tell you right away what I feel is off/wrong/stifling in the story. I will let you know what I think should be done. I can tell you how to pace your story, the ways you can structure it - I have a myriad of words at my disposal that can be used to strengthen or change a story.
I am a perfectionist. I re-read stories all the time, especially my own. My criticism may sometimes seem harsh but it is only for your benefit. I am not going to be cruel, merely blunt. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Characterization. I study the characters and try to know their weaknesses and strengths. Grammar is another thing I specialize in: I am a stickler for sentence structure, word usage, and punctuation. The way a writer structures even one sentence can change the entire tone of the work of fiction. I am proficient in writing about love, relationships, emotion, hurt, spiritual, introspection, human nature, slasher-gore-horror, supernatural, drama, and psychological horror. Third person perspective is what I'm best at. I excel in imagery and diction - those two are everything in a story for me. They set tone, mood, characterization....
If you want a variation or different possibilities in some area, then you're in luck. The direction of a storyline is quite visible to me and I am good with seeing the plot-threads as well. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
You need to tell me exactly what you want from me. Exactly. Otherwise...I examine everything and go all the way with it. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
Canonical pairings, some non-canonical pairings (only if it's convincing), romance, horror, drama, sci-fi, urban fantasy, demon-centered stories, dark fiction and. I would rather beta stories rated teen and over. I'm better with darker or heavier topics and dry or dark or gallows humor. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Yaoi. No adventure stories. No tragedies (they make me cry). The exception to tragedies: brother-sister romance. If it is tragic and heart-wrenching then I'm okay with it. Oddly enough, I'm okay with Yuri, too. No horror involving ghosts. I hate ghosts (except for Danny Phantom). No stories using honorifics. I hate that. I understand if someone uses "miko" instead of priestess because of the connotations, but there are English equivalents to the honorifics. For example, -san can be translated as "Ms.", "Mrs.", "Mr.", "Miss", -sama could be "Sir, Lady, Lord". I only read stories with honorifics if I find something that redeems them. Like the theme or the concept or the imagery.
If it's exceptional, then I'll make an exception. |
