Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've only published one story to date and it is still a work in progress. I also have my work (since chapter 4) reviewed by a beta and I find it a useful exercise to get a second opinion as to whether I've explained something clearly, kept the characters in character and whether the story idea is any good. I feel the most useful function a beta can perform is to be honest yet encouraging. Most people who don't like a story or struggle with the quality of the language skills will most likely read another story and not bother to give a constructive comment. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'll be honest. I'll help with grammar and spelling where I can. My grammar is not perfect but as I write many reports as part of my job it is something that I regularly work at. I'll let you know if the story doesn't make sense and suggest ideas if any come to mind. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I sometimes work irregular hours and may not always be able to respond within a couple of days - but I'll do my best. I'm also still writing my own stories. I have limited medical knowledge so am unlikely to help in that area. I haven't seen all of Season 4 or any of Season 5 yet. I'm Australian so I'm not an expert on American slang, we use the metric system and spell some words differently (I'll try to resist correcting the spelling where I know that word is spelt differently by Americans). I also don't claim to be an expert on writing accents such as Carson's or foreign languages such as Czech. |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer to someone who is keen to learn and who demonstrates this through improvements in the quality of the work submitted.
I prefer Stargate Atlantis stories especially those with a plot. I don't mind the odd introspective character study or additional scene for one of the TV series episodes. AU versions are also good. I do expect any person interested in using me as a beta to proof read their own work before submission. Since I haven't seen Season 5 and am only half way through watching my Season 4 DVDs, I prefer stories that don't contain spoilers for these episodes. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
Slash stories. Although I'm not against the use of original characters they should not play a larger role than the main characters. Crossovers with other series other than SG-1 or Universe when it gets going. |
