Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta I'm concerned first and foremost with structure, sound, and sense. It should read easily, the voice should be clear, and the general flow be coherent and make sense to the reader. My secondary concerns are spelling and grammar, which can sometimes ruine the readability of a good story if left unchecked. Finally I concern myself with the story itself, does it make sense, if it's a canon story are the characters canon or acting OoC? Should it be AU or AR? Mostly as a beta I thing it's your story, I'm there as a second set of eyes to catch the things you might have missed, but I don't want to change your story. I will make suggestions when I think you're out of whack, but in the end it's always your story. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Native English speaker with extensive knowledge of idomatic American English and slang, also quite knowledgeable of UK English and Australian English. I have an English Lit minor, and I am comfortable with non-english speakers. I work with many Europeans and South Americans for whom English is a second language, so I can often tell what you meant to say even if you didn't quite get the words out on paper correctly. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
If a story has the characters acting too OoC or seems to include secondary characters in drive-by scenes (one or two lines, no real plot involvement) then I tend to want to excise them from the story or change it substantially, so I can become overbearing on that point. You have to really check me on that, just remind me it's YOUR story. :D |
Preferred: types of entries I prefer over others
I prefer to beta Bones, Chuck, and Firefly stories. I can do CSI, Law & Order CI, and Saving Grace, but would rather not stray too far from that genre. I prefer flangst, intelligent fluff, drama, and humour. Straight Angst is good in small doses, hurt/comfort is okay as long as it doesn't devlove into a whump, and crime/mystery and SciFi are okay as long as you realize I'm a realist when it comes to those genres I am a stickler for realism and detail, and I will be pointing out obvious flaws, mistakes, and technical corrections everytime I encounter them. |
Would Rather Not: types of entries I do not want to beta for
I can not and will not beta rape stories. I get that it happens, I get that there are valid plot developments involving the act, I just don't do rape. If I get to know an author I might make an exception, I can think of only one right now who I'd actually make that exception for and I don't think she's ever written a rape story. |
